Have had good service from Merril, but I seem to recall some like Danner?
No backpack, just short hikes in the Smokies.
Other brands?

I bought a pair on Timberland hiking boots along time ago, like 15years ago. They were not cheap at all but they have been really good boots for all these years. I doubt Timberland still makes them but look at the brand an see if they still make any good ones.

I've got some, but those bad boys are heavy.

I prefer the Merrill I've had to the Danners I've had

I have the women's sugarpine
They are pretty light(for hiking shoes) and I like that they aren't the usual brown color other hiking shoes are.

Merrell makes some great shoes and boots. The moab would be perfect for what you're looking into, and it comes in mid and low cut. In the same price range you'll be able to find boots from Vasque too. Going up the price range a bit and you'll start looking at boots from Lowa, Scarpa, and Salewa; all of whom make great boots. No experience with Danner though.

I wear Moabs a good bit and walk a lot in them. No real complaints, other than I feel like they could have a bit more arch support.
Good post, thanks.

If you have the Moabs and like them then switching out the insert might be something to look into. For the Moab I would use the Superfeet green class. The green is the highest volume for the superfeet inserts and typically most popular for boots in general.

Get some "approach" shoes from a climbing shoe company. La Sportiva, Boreal, and Five Ten are good places to start.

Wait, I'll check. I may not have the Moabs. All those Merrils look alike.

+1 for approach shoes. Love my La sportivas. Don't Remember the name but they were marketed as a cross between an approach shoe and a trail runner. I've got some Brooks trail runners that are great too.

I have danner and couldn't be happier with them. I constantly have foot pain and problems and they feel great.

I'll second Ahnu. their Event waterproofing is tits. I first heard about Event after I bought some Shnee's hunting boots. I don't buy goretex anymore.

Keen. Only keens for me
I'm fine with merrell and have had a couple pairs of them but they've never lasted like the Keens have.
