Seems it's OK now as per NOLA.com.
Sorry if already posted, didn't see it.

why do you need protection? Afraid a deer is going to climb a tree and gore you? Just make a good shot.

I don't deer hunt anymore so I don't need protection. Just thought I'd give you ole boys a heads up on some elevated fire power out there during bow season.
Carry on.

I used to be in the woods all day every day, and 90% of the time, I was strapped

Three reasons:
Big hogs
Possibly alligators if you wade in
People at the parking lot on WMAs

Guy in pearl river WMA was attacked by a hog a couple of years ago while squirrel hunting.

I have definitely backed off of a scout trip wading/walking into an areas because there were big gators in a little tiny hole in the swamp, and the water had almost receded to nothing. There was a 10' one about 200yds in the woods away from the lake hissing at me. Same thing in a flooded area deep in Joyce. Saw some big arse gators when I was wading in up to my knees. Turned around and left because I was by myself with no gun.

Most likely way to get got tho is running into thugs in the parking lot.

I carry a .22 magnum loaded with rat shot for rattlers during bow season.

If I am in the outdoors I have a handgun somewhere within easy reach.

Screw that.

The woods are fun without a gun.

One of the biggest reasons I have never bowhunted is that I like being afield with guns.

I have wondered, if you shoot a deer with an arrow and it is alive when found how do you finish it off? Another arrow and wait?

Just enough pics of hogs and meth heads. Keep an old 357 on my hip anymore. Just not worth the chance.

If you've ever done this, you'll know a deer's will to live is only the slightlest bit less than your ability to hold him under for what seems like 10 minutes.

1. crackheads/thugs
2. aggressive stray dogs
3. hogs

#1 is a very real issue in some areas
