He definitely needs to be held accountable for his actions but 20 years without the possibility of parole or probation seems kind of harsh for an accident that didn't injure anyone

You answered your own question. Our "civilized" notions of law and order don't let us take him out back and beat him with fan belts after the 2nd DUI - so at a certain point, when someone doesn't listen - I mean a 6th DUI means he never drives sober. He's probably been busted dozens of times for it and now been prosecuted at this level because he...will...not...listen.

It's not because of what happened, but that he will drive drunk again and this is to protect your kids and mine from him.

I think it's perfect.

Prosecutors say he was on Valium and meth when arrested. 6th DUI - this person can't be trusted in society and is too dangerous. No regard for others' safety.

Years ago My wife and I spent 5 days in a hospital after being hit by a guy on his 4th or 5th DUI and hadn't had a license for years.- of course didn't have insurance. We spent Christmas Day in the hospital bc of her internal injuries.

Think about that happening to your SO and tell me the punishment is too harsh

I have no problem w/ the sentence. Think about 6 DWIs for a minute...SIX. I'ts just pure luck no one has died or been seriously injured.

But 20 years flat? Pretty much every single habitual armed robbers, rapists, child molesters, manslaughters, attempted murderers, and assault with a deadly weapon guys don't get that much time. Even felons charged with those things don't get that harsh of a sentence.

Just because you had one unfortunate incident shouldn't mean logic should be thrown out the window. I'm not excusing what he did, but the punishment is absurd

When you've been caught six times, it's no longer an unfortunate incident.

ETA: The statute requires a mandatory 10 in certain circumstances. We don't know what his prior sentences were. He might have been given all the leeway in the world and just kept fricking up. Judge was clearly tired of hearing BS excuses.

How many times did he do it and not get caught?

Also, the meth and Valium are a nice touch.

I wonder how many times he's actually been arrested for DWI?

You can't be serious? If my wife and I were the only people to have had this happen you might have a point.

It happens all the time - we were very lucky b/c there haven't been any major, long term health issues. A lot of people never walk away as you well know. Those guys are ticking time bombs and when they go off they could just hurt themselves or many others too. Either way they have no place in society b/c they are a danger to everyone near a road.

Two wrecks in my family in six months. Drunk driver caused both of 'em.

The attitude in this state is very lackadaisical about drunk driving.

I hope the guy in the OP never gets out.

Vette, just b/c of two unfortunate incidences you're wanting that harsh of a penalty?

Screw this guy. I don't care if he drinks himself to death but, when he gets behind the wheel, it becomes a public safety risk.

I do think that 20 years is excessive but, I don't know all of his circumstances that resulted in that sentence.

But for the grace of god. He should have served time for at least 3 of the previous 5.

One? fricker has had at the very least 6 of these "unfortunate" incidents, which all happened to be 100% within his own control.

20 Years for him is too harsh, 10 without parole is plenty unless some of his previous incidents caused injuries to others. If so, frick him.

I'd also push the DA to go after whoever the heck is letting him drive their vehicles. You should not be able to own or drive a vehicle within 5 or 10 years of getting your 3rd DUI. If you own a vehicle without a DL, you are going to drive it. SO you shouldn't be able to register one in your name. If you let someone else drive your car without a DL it should be against some form of law. Someone was letting him drive their vehicles a lot.
