Here in Florida it's against the law to use cables is gates.

About 10 years ago there were a few day offs pretty close together and they changed the law

What about barbwire? Not as gates but as fences.

Barbed wire is fine just not across the trail or road.

All gates must be painted a fluorescent color too but they don't enforce it

I agree.

We do have a lot of public land in our county though. And it can be hard to know where property lines are

and heck the parents bear some responsibility for letting a 15 year old kid ride off on his own on a dirtbike.

dirtbikes and atvs are not children's toys.

It would be impossible to enforce in very rural areas. But never a bad idea to make things more visible.

I always tend to side with the property owners. I have property and don't want others dictating what I do. If they are doing something to harm others that may wander onto the property even if by accident that is wrong.

Does anyone know if this just wasn't a wire closing off the driveway onto the property?

Look at the link in my 2nd page post. That is the only cable I saw on that area of the road.

That looks marked to me.

II could see it riding up the tire, ripping the fender off, up the fork, and over the handlebars. There should be evidence of the height on the bike

Only thing about gates you can go around them unless the entire property is fenced.

We have cables across old logging access roads leding onto our property from the main road. We have several cables and they are well marked with flags and no trespassing signs.

I feel bad for all involved. But where does it end? If I pur an 8 ft Bigfoot with a no trespass sign in the middle of a trail and a biker hits it and dies, I'm liable?
On the other hand, it's a kid having fun. Parents bear the responsibility of training the kid what/how/when/where to ride.

When I was a kid, we did dumb things that resemble this in a way. We would pull the shiny tape out of an 8track and string it across a road at night. Car approaches, lights shine on tape, slams on brakes thinking the worst. Thank God no one ever got hurt! Dumb dumb dumb!

Bigfeet have feelings too, don't you watch those Jack Link commercials. Don't call him an "it".

Mississippi has the same laws (where I hunt). No trespassing sign still means you are trespassing. However, I did not know about the lack of liability though.

I'm not so sure about the lack of liability part. With todays courts you are always liable for something.

Did it say that the kid was trespassing? Maybe it was his own families land. It's a tragic accident either way.

We know no details. I found a google street image that may be the spot.
