This used to happen all the time. Haven't heard about it in a while.

I had thought about doing this one time to keep people off where i was hunting at the time.

Until I rode with a freind to meet his two girl cousins and noticed the John Deere Gator in the feild and little peices of blond hair all over the barbed wire fence next to the gate.

There was a story on Archery Talk about the same type situation. A 14 year old on a 4wheeler was killed and the land owner was convicted of manslaughter

I hit a cable in the woods at a decent speed when riding my old Kawasaki when I was a kid. Caught me at chest level and flipped me off the back - the quad kept going and stopped in some brush.

Cables anywhere are deathtraps. We went to gates on our properties long ago to avoid this very situation.

We had cables, coming off our gates, as supports and because there were room for 4 wheelers. However, orange banners were hung off them every 18" or so, so someone that may have been taking that route, would know something was there.

somebody is about to get in trouble. I think a cable neck high between 2 trees would be considered a lethal for obvious reasons and if its not consistant with cabling of the entire property he is about to lose said property and get arse raped in prison.

it was a child on a dirt bike jesus wtf is wrong with people.

I knew 2 kids in Cameron that were always trespassing and hunting in high school, running their boat through someone's marsh. Well the old landowner got tired of it and sunk an old washing machine in the bayou. The kids hit it in their boat and that 25 hp motor climbed up in the boat and took a big chunk out of one of their backs and cut the shite out of the other kid. Fricked up situation

The guy that had this cable on his land can be in big trouble. Trespassing or not you can't set up death traps.

Yea, I would be surprised if there isn't a lawsuit filed.

Just reread the article.
quote:

death traps

Is a huge stretch of words. It was a cable stretched between two trees. Does barbwire come to mind? It says that it hit the front of the bike first. How many death traps are set that low? Doesnt it seem much more likely that he ran into some barbwire that ran up the bike and snagged him.

This isnt directly meant to you up, its to everybody talking about how this guy is out trying to kill kids. He may in fact be trying to do so, but without the facts we know nothing.

I was riding a 4 wheeler down a pipeline in Ruston as a kid in the early 80s and hit a cable someone put up. To this day I still think about how lucky I am that my dad out a gun rack on the four wheeler about a week before. The gun rack was strong enough to cause the cable to come lose from the tree. In Louisiana, a landowner would go to jail for a VERY long time for doing that. VERY long time.

should have had the wire marked with marking tape preferably pink, neon green, yellow, something very bright and very distinguisable.

I agree it should have been marked and maybe it was. But it sounds like it wasn't placed neck high. Maybe was used as a gate. This is tragic but I'm not jumping to conclusions.

quote:

An investigation of the scene revealed the cable struck the front forks of the bike, continued over the handlebars and then struck the teen in the neck, ejecting him from the bike.

I also know someone in sw la that had a routine problem of kids on dirt bike trespassing on his property and ridind and rutting them up badly ,pressed charges a couple of times...

After heavy rains the PT a small ditch in to help drain water so they could plant....keep in mind small ditch was about a mile into their property....

Kid on dirt bike hit ditch going about 45 mph....wiped out got hurt pretty bad....

Kids family sued landowner and won, family had to sell land that had been inn their family for 5 generations......

Trespassing can cause serious problems...btw...they had made at least 15 calls to sheriffs office over trespassing in the months leading up to this incident....

If you are trespassing and get hurt it should not be the landowners fault

If your land lines are marked and you have no trespassing signs properly posted landowner not at fault. I know my family has been in that situation.
Neighbor got hurt while hunting on our property without permission. He didn't get a penny from us all he got was a broke arm and messed up elbow.

That is a very scary situation but it sounds different than the one that the OP linked. You were in the middle of a pipeline and it sounds like it was aimed for your neck/head. The information that we know so far about the death is not of the same nature.

Agreed.
