I know guys that do a hunt in Kansas

This is my new plan. Piddle around here on public land, then head to Kansas for 3 days in late January to bust some mallards and canadas. I will be getting a 4 wheeler next week and that will open up quite a few more public options.

I told you to just hunt public or guided hunts man. You saw how terrible our lease was in gueydan. I'm hunting venice and other public spots. I killed more ducks the last two weekend on public then my lease did in two seasons. Finding a good lease is impossible these days.

know guys that do a hunt in Kansas and one further up north...then maybe a local hunt or two....then call it a year.

I've thought about taking a week in Canada and another in Kansas. I pay $5-6k/year for my lease. We have a lot of options, but when there are no ducks, there are no ducks. And I'm not in a position to up and go when the ducks are here. We have a good time and I enjoy the camp and the time with friends. That's the only thing keeping me in it. And the year round access to a couple of private lakes. If I was on a budget, no way in hell I'd spend the money I am. At least I get to expense it through my business. But for what I spend and as little as I've gotten to go the last couple of years, I could've done guided hunts and come out a few thousand ahead.

We did a 2 day hunt in Ks and it was about 750 each. That covered all expenses. We are doing 3 days next year and I figure 1200 will more than cover it.
I would love a trip to Canada, but that is out of my budget.

Here is the deal. You are right. It is like a fraternity. My dad and I have gone through it for 30+ years. Back in the day duck leases were cheap as shite. Like stupid cheap. Especially marsh leases in south la. Well as time went by and land owners realized they could get the same for leasing a duck blind on 1 acre as they could for leasing a section of cattle grazing 500 acres during the year. Things changed. So unless you were grand fathered in or had family land you were screwed. My wife is from creole and has land and i can't even hunt it because of the shite show with the land. The thing is if you balk for one second on a price per acre your done. They will find someone who is willing to pay it. You have to find a land owner that will genuinely work with you and will give you year round access to make it viable. Once you can get that the owner will look at you like you are part of the property not someone who uses it. Negotiate for year round access and do not settle for less. It will ensure your stability of the lease and you will gain the trust of the owners. When they need help with cattle or rebuilding a levee etc. drop everything and go. That's always how I have done it.

Also geauxcats holler at me and we will go pound some Ducks next year if you can't find a place. Nothing better than taking a guy that doesnt have a lease and murdering them. Which we do.

This is the reason the OB has the greatest assembly of good people that look out for the good of their fellow man.

I feel your pain man. Just started Duck hunting hard a few years ago. It seems like everytime you might find a legit place you bring it to the OB and everyone warns you about how terrible it is. As much as it sucks I'm glad everyone is looking out. Nice to know they are saving me from wasting thousands of dollars.

One day there will be the perfect OB property where the booze and ducks flow like rivers and we can all join.

I find deer leases are way easier to find....if you don't mind spending the money and driving to Texas
