Long arms are not ideal for use in confined spaces. Shot guns, pumps especially, are not an ideal choice. So much bad information in these types of threads. Experience pushes me to rifle and pistol caliber SBR's or sub guns first then to semi auto handguns. Shot guns would be last on the list,

I think most women could handle a hand gun much easier than a 20 guage.

Most people can't hit the broad side of a barn with a pistol first time they shoot. If she is willing to practice and train a pistol would work. But a shotgun will be quicker to learn to shoot accurately.

I don't know of any good $300 pistols. The SW shields are around $400 I believe. Spend $500 and you have many possibilities. But get her to practice.

Go to budsgunshop.com. Look for the police trade ins category under used guns. They have several Glocks and M&Ps there for $299-$379. From my experience they are in good condition and only have holster wear.

I would still say get an 870 or Mossberg 500 pump and mount yourself a light on it.

What exactly is a scarred woman going to be doing? Clearing the house like a swat team member? A shotgun is a very fine choice for locking the bedroom door and staying put.

IMHO, people point shotguns faster and better than pistols. Not to mention the BB spread

In 300 dollar range.

For $300 you can get two high point 380s. Dual wield FTW.

Also, buy a machete. Tape it to the end of your 270 barrel with duct tape. Now you have a great stabbing weapon too. Shoot him once and then let out your "battle cry" as you charge him to finish the intruder off with a stab.

And she'd have two not one but two objects to throw at the attacker when they both jam

Doesn't matter. A handgun in the hands of a scared person who doesn't shoot a lot isn't much more than a double-ended flash bang grenade.
Best response so far this year. I may steal that for a sig line.

Thread like this are always entertaining -- so far, this one gets a grade of A+

Sounds like the OP will re-think the handgun purchase. I know good used Glocks are out there -- bought a Gen 3 Glock 19 this week off Gunbroker for under $400 that looks like it was never fired. (also saw a Gen 2 Glock 19 sell for $345 last week on Gunbroker).

The OP has already been advised to get a quality firearm and to avoid getting a Judge. So the only additional substantive advice I can offer, if he sticks with his plan to buy a handgun, is to get his wife a lesson from someone qualified to teach her how to shoot it.

Kind of going along with what you're saying. Hearing somebody pump a shotgun in a silent house you've broken into is probably going to scare the dog piss out of you and make you exit quickly.

Tell that to the meth head who will do anything to get some cash for his next fix. He wont care what noise he hears if his cracked out head can even hear anything. I wouldn't bet my family's lives on someone "probably" being scared of the sound of racking a shotgun.

If you want to save money, just keep a recording of a shotgun pumping on your iPhone. If you hear a noise, just press play.

I like that idea except I'm going to use a sound clip of someone loading a belt fed machine gun.
