If it hasn't been said yet, then the judge isn't a terrible choice.

Kind of going along with what you're saying. Hearing somebody pump a shotgun in a silent house you've broken into is probably going to scare the dog piss out of you and make you exit quickly.

If you have to pump it first your doing it wrong.

Tell that to the meth head who will do anything to get some cash for his next fix. He wont care what noise he hears if his cracked out head can even hear anything. I wouldn't bet my family's lives on someone "probably" being scared of the sound of racking a shotgun.
^^^^

And not just the meth heads.

Don't leave out the paranoid schizophrenic who stumbled into your home because "the voices" told him he should disembowel the occupants.

Canik makes a near $300 9mm.

Mind if I make a suggestion? Spring for $500 and your options increase dramatically.

I also understand your budget, but that's my suggestion.

I don't think anyone on this board seriously advocates the sound of a pump shotgun scarring someone away.

Smith Wesson .357.
Loaded with 38 specials that expand. The heavy gun absorbs almost all of the kick. The single action makes it simple to point and shoot. Keep it simple.

I've got a CZ82 under my pillow. Not bad on recoil, Hornaday makes a mean bullet for it, and it's well made. Less than $300.
