We do for the most part here in Florida. Manatee zones also tend to prevent you from going too fast for very long.

I would never go fast in a small body of water. There is too many things that can go wrong in small water. I've came very close to running over people on my side of the channel.

You just gotta be smart with kids at home depending on you to make smart decisions. Like anyone else, i'd love to go 85 on the water, cruise the open roads on a Harley, etc.

The PFD's were for race boats that did rap up you neck. Kind of like a class 1 PFD.
With more boats on the water these days, I see that there is a need to slow people down on the water. As to how? shite if I know, but making people aware how speed kills people on the water just might help.
Look at it this way. Two men died in the last 2 weeks due to speeding on the water that was posted here on the OB.

Not that I'm proud of it but I've been "fast" in three different boats.
75 in a fishing boat before I was old enough to drive
95 in a racing boat when I was in high school
115 in a cigarette boat when I was in college
All were scary and fun at the same time, but none were in a small body of water. Nor was I driving any of them. Legislation isn't going to stop any of this and I personally think we don't need more unnecessary laws and this isn't considered necessary.
I feel sorry for this man's wife and children, but people die every day doing things they love. He knew the risks of what he was doing the same way all of us do, when we do something that we love that's dangerous.

It may not have been the sole cause, but it certainly exacerbated the issue and definitely decreased the likelihood of survival in the crash. To imply that a high rate of speed had nothing to do with the situation is kind of disingenuous.

but to also imply that going slower would've saved him is the same, if you think you can't get killed going 35 then you're being naive...my only point

Definitely a contributing factor. No need to kid ourselves, he liked to run fast as do many others. Sadly, this is the risk you run when you put the hammer down.

Nobody is accusing him of anything. We're just using this as an opportunity to reiterate the risks of hauling arse on the water.
You are being obtuse in not acknowledging that risk goes up exponentially with speed in a boat. Sure, he could have been killed at 35 MPH, but that doesn't mean it isn't safer.

Look at that picture were the boat stop at. I'm sure he wasn't doing 20-30 mph.

Gets me as no one wears a life vest, I have lost four friends or folks I have know because no life vest?? One a guy and his wife on Ray Roberts Lake in Texas in a new champion with a 225 flipped and chunked both out and drowned. He was in the boat business for 20 years?? Friend of mine down the street puts around in an antique fiftys boat with his kid and wife no life vests except the ones stuffed under the front deck,,crazy man.
