Would a compact saw work or would a standard sized saw be better? How much of a bitch are they to clean afterwards?

That's what I'm thinking about doing.

Amazon has a kit for $154 with saw, battery, charger and bag

It's a compact though. I guess that would have enough power to cut through bone

ETA: I know as soon as I buy it they'll be all kinds of holiday sales for them

We use a saws-all and have a traditional meat saw for backup. Ours is the standard size. We can do several deer with no worries on battery life. We clean it with the hose between deer and use soap/brush after each weekend.

A compact may work just as well, never tried one.

All the time. Use it to cut the hooves off, head off, split the hips, etc

My husband will cut up anything with a sawzall. I expect him to conquer the whole world with that thing.

great idea. No sense in spending $150 on a good one that may potentially get tore up

I killed one in Missouri ten or so years ago at dark when the temp was 2 degrees. The guide put it on the skinning rack and said he would clean it the next morning. I watched him cut the back straps out with a sawzall the next morning in -1 degree weather with a 20 mph wind.

It was the damnest thing I'd seen in my life up to that point.

No. All I use is a skinning knife, there is no need to go all Texas Chain Saw massacre on a little old whitetail.

If I was to do that id get one from harbo freight.

But, you don't need a saw a skinning knife and you can quarter a deer just as fast once you know what you are doing. I've quartered plenty of deer and elk with just a knife, you don't want to cut through bone with a saw or you are doing it wrong. Just follow the natural muscle seperation and cut between the bones. Plenty of western game youtube videos. There's one where the guy from Muzzy ( what's his name?) quarters an elk in like 5 minutes.

a sawzall seems highly unnecessary for cleaning a deer

We do. Split the back legs and cut the head off and the hooves off. I have been know to carve pumpkins with one too.

We switched to some big limb cutters instead of the sawzall. Faster and easier to clean up.
