I guess I just grew up hunting differently. As a kid I would take off from the camp on a "squirrel hunt" and be gone most of the day. Tromping through brambles and briars bottoms and woods. Cleaning has nothing to do with it. Just being toted along they get scratched and scrapes and bumps and bruises. It's just part of it. They still function perfectly and are mechanically sound, they were just run hard.

11 is old enough for most boys to shoot just about anything IMO.

Out of those two I would get a .308

7mm08. Then when he's older, you've got an excuse to buy the .308 as well. Gotta think long term.

Bought my son a .308 when he was 9. Hunt mostly out of shooting houses so he could prop on the window.

He is 16 now and the gun still fits and shoots great.

I'm left handed and it looks like 4lsu2jr who will be two next Friday is also going to be a lefty. That gives me wowsers in my trousers to buy more LH guns for the both of us.

A Model 7 in 7mm-08 looks to be my next purchase.

my dad reloads ammo and has a .308, so ammo would basically be free.

I'd choose a .308 even before that info

I should let you feel out my lefty 260 Stiller, youll buy a custom soon enough for you and the son to share.

I sure am hoping my son is a lefty, he's only 2 months so Ill have to work on him.

I'm a bit partial to 28 caliber (7mm) rifles for whitetails and I was going to recommend a 7mm-08 but if T4 says .308... I'll take his word for it.
Glad you're in good spirits about it, and recovering!

The Model 7 in the 7mm-08 is a fine gun.

My vote is 7mm-08. Hunt Jr started using it at 11 and he is now 18 and still loves it. Killed several deer with it. He was a small thin young-un and recoil was never an issue.

I would go with the 7mm-08 in a short action light and easy to handle rifle. They make great climbing or ladder stand guns. I use my kids gun for this

Most people don't even realize the ballistics of the 7mm-08 they just spout off the same ole shite they have always heard.

I used the Federal Fusion 120gr bullets but now I reload Barnes 120gr. They are deer killers and my kids have never complained about recoil.

7mm-08 120gr Federal Fusion
Muzzle Velocity: 3000 fps
Muzzle Energy: 2398 ft. lbs.

7mm-08 140gr Federal Fusion
Muzzle Velocity (fps): 2850,
Muzzle Energy (foot lbs): 2525

.270 130gr Federal Fusion
Muzzle Velocity: 3050 fps
Muzzle Energy: 2685 ft. lbs

.308 150gr Federal Fusion
Muzzle Velocity: 2820 fps
Muzzle Energy: 2650 ft. lbs.

25-06 120gr Federal Fusion
Muzzle Velocity: 2980 fps
Muzzle Energy: 2365 ft. lbs.
