Kids seem to be getting braces at much younger ages these days. In the past week, I have seen three kids all younger than nine with braces. Are regular pediatric dentists referring these kids for ortho consults? Braces seem to be "in". Are parents getting bilked out of money today that they would not have done 20-30 years ago?

It's a racket. Ever know someone who went to an orthodontist and DIDN'T get braces? Me neither

Both of my kids are under 11 and have braces. They have small jaws and teeteeth need to be moved to me way for the new ones coming in.

Yes. It's all a scam IMHO. They acted all panicky several years ago because my oldest son had a "cross bite". They wanted to immediately get him into braces and shite. It was like $5000. His smile is just fine and he's been growing up with ZERO problems. OMG a cross bite!!!! Aggghhhhh!!!!
Yeah it's a crock of shite

It's a scheme to separate parents from their monies.

I got em in HS for a "slight overbite." I'm at the dentist a few months later and he says "Why did you get braces, you have perfectly straight teeth?" So I decided to get then taken off early. Both my parents are physicians and they agreed. The ortho made me sign all these waivers that I was refusing medical treatment and spent about an hour shaming me for "going against doctor's orders"

Over a decade later, my teeth are still perfectly straight. I still have a slight overbite, which is pretty normal and no one could possibly give a shite. It was a complete waste.

Legit tooth problems, yes. Some people have messed up grills. Most people don't and every single dentist wants to wire braces up for everything. When I was younger and my wisdom teeth started coming in, I went to the dentist to find out why I was having pain. At this point I didn't know that it was due to my wisdom teeth. They did their X-Ray and showed me the cause. Immediately they brought someone in to schedule surgery to cut them out. I was like, wait a minute wait a minute hold on!!! I wanted details as to WHY they wanted to do surgery and was it necessary. After going through the pros and cons I decided frick NO. The teeth grew in just fine and after a couple weeks of mild pain it went away. It's like asking a barber "Do I need a haircut?"
WTF do you think they're gonna say???

Dentists and orthodontists aren't real doctors so they have to make their $ somewhere

In this "look at me" selfie world, only braces or perfect teeth will keep you from being a social pariah.

The peer pressure starts by 2nd grade and the pediatric orthos are filling a need.

And now some orthodontists are saying you have to wear braces or a retainer for ever. That's way different from when I was young many moons ago.

At 7 my daughter had a tooth growing sideways on her bottom jaw. It was pushing all her other teeth to the side. The choices were let it ride and frick up her mouth, or braces on the bottom and tighten every two weeks. I said it was a money racket and I WAs getting a second opinion. The second opinion said he had never seen that in 30 years practicing and I probably should let her get braces from the first doc.

It's a money racket.

Yes. My daughter had braces, she legit needed them. Ortho said she has to wear retainer. Brother had braces. Wore retainer briefly after braces removed.

What is the retainer indefinite BS??

This.

I had braces originally for "werewolf teeth" (my canines came out of my gums way too high), so at least that made sense. Then they spent 2 years past my original removal date (after 2 years already) trying to decide whether I had an underbite or an overbite. I was always careful with my rubber bands and everything, yet they NEVER gave me a clear answer as to when my braces would be off. I learned to stop asking...

My file had my removal date as September 2005 all the way until I actually got them off in December 2007, which was a surprise itself.

Yeah, I had a retainer too and was never told when to stop wearing them, so I stopped on my own. That was years ago and my teeth are perfect to this day, so...

Good genes. No one in my family has needed braces. So I can't say. Sucks to have messed up teeth.

Yeah, they call it stage 1 and stage two braces. Step daughter (8) is getting them next week.

I got my braces when I was 17.
