ain't taking a 55% pay cut to go live in China

Actually, you definitely could. Yes Hong Kong is expensive as frick, but you would get by easily on $150K. Plus Hong Kong has plenty of white people living there and they all speak English, so they aren't really hiring in Hong Kong.
And Shanghai probably doesn't crack the Top 20 of most expensive cities to live in. Chinese are relatively poor, and they're not going to make it so expensive to live in that they can't afford it. Yes there is a middle class forming in China, but Shanghai wouldn't bankrupt you.

things in china are a hell of a lot more expensive than they are here....and the cities are exceedingly shitty places to be...
I mean certain things are, like cars and electronics, but food and rent, not really. Of course it depends on how nice of apartments you live in, but I lived in Beijing for a few years, and never paid more than $600 a month for rent, and I lived mostly in nice neighborhoods. Granted Shanghai is more expensive, but I'd say you'll find cities way more expensive than it in the US. The things that are more expensive in China are extravagancies, like cars, jewelry, and electronics. Food and rent is cheap compared to much of the US.

If I were in my mid-20's and single, I'ld be all the hell over that.
-The USD is trading ~ 1:6 against the Chinese Yuan, this means shite there is dirt fricking cheap in American Dollars. In other words, you would be making (roughly) in China the equivalent of $900,000/year here (depending on where you live in China).
- If you work outside the US and spend 2 weeks or less on US soil, you pay zero US taxes (no idea on taxes in China)
Keep half (spend, savings account, whatever), put the other half into something that provides a decent return. After 10 years you can come back to the US and retire on your investments. Thirty-five and retired doesn't suck.

I'd love to do it, just for the experience. Kids are gone, why not?

Too bad they don't use Yen. I swear the only differences 90% of America know about China and Japan is China is the one with a shite load of people, a big wall, and is communist, while Japan was the one who was nuked, has kamikaze pilots, and has weird sexual fetishes.

Easy there Douchington, not all of us have had our eyes opened up to Eastern cultures like you.

You forgot about karate and the yakuza

Well, Captain count, if I said France is known for it's pasta and a city with a massive ancient colosseum, I'm sure that most posters here would call me an idiot. I regularly see ignorance on that scale here, and just have to shake my head and say nothing.

1 year, $150k untaxed, plus per diem.

I really don't think most Americans would know the difference. If I said Kung Fu and the triads were from Japan, I doubt most would bat an eye. I was tempted to write sushi, but even that I wasn't confident enough to say that most Americans know the difference.

Most people here aren't into Asian cultures enough to know that there is a difference between Japan and China. It's akin to asking someone from Turkey about the difference between North and South La.

If I remember correctly my company had to pay 45% on me after 183 days.

couldn't do the paycut.
do I live rent free? Given a car? Can I travel?
if yes to the above then I can be convinced. I would be a great white person over there too.
I would probably open a Meat and three restaurant.

No, it's not at all. China and Japan have the second and third largest GDP in the world. Over 1.5 billion people live in these countries. Louisiana is 4.5 million people. No one outside of the United States gives a shite about Louisiana. China and Japan are so large and have so much power that they're hard to ignore and we need to understand them. With the internet, I really don't think most of society has an excuse to not understand the differences between Japan and China than we should with the difference between Germany and France.

What if that is already your job? I'm a professional, I'm white, and if you adjusted for moving/taxes in a communist country/etc, I'm probably doing better than that. Although just "being white" is probably a little less stressful than my current position.
