I did it last month knowing full and well that I wasn't going to accept their offer. It's good practice and like other posters have said it expands your network as well. You never know unless you go.

Also what's your wife do that makes you so certain she'd have a tough time finding a job?

I'm at my current job after going to an interview here with no intention of leaving my previous company. You never know.

I've done it for experience fresh out of college.

Probably wouldn't now if I knew there was zero chance I'd take it.

1% chance though, maybe...

Tucson isn't that big of a city and it's mostly government contractors out there. It would be hard for her to find work given that the city itself is barely larger than New Orleans

It's not small either though. You're talking about roughly 1MM people in the metro area.

Just tossing out numbers here, say they offer you 25-30% bump over your current salary plus relocation. You can take that to your boss and see if they will bump you 15-20% to keep you. If they won’t then you’re not as valuable as you think and you can start looking local.
Yeah don't listen to this guy.
First of all, using a job offer as leverage is a bad idea. Secondly IF you choose to do so, be ready to WALK if they tell you to kick rocks.

While I understand your frustration, keep in mind that recruiters end up getting f'ed pretty often - using an "open" job as leverage to get higher pay at their current job etc.

My brother is a recruiter at the largest firm here in Houston and this happens constantly. One of his new hires didn't show up to work......

because he was in jail for felony domestic violence and meth

A million people in Tuscon and your wife wouldn't be able to land a job there? What makes her so special?

No. I've even declined an interview for a (effectively) $200k job.

Now, I have gone on interviews I thought there was no chance they would offer the job, but not the other way.

yeah, she can get a job in the BR area but not in Tucson? seems odd.

unless maybe she's just been with that company so long, it's not worth the risk?

Yes, I interviewed for a job in Hawaii. I would have accepted the offer if they offered a considerable amount more than what I was making at the time, but they said that they would basically only be able to match what I was making.

Apparently, salaries aren't really high there, regardless of cost of living.

ETA: I'm with everyone else wondering what your wife does that would hinder a move?

I'm in a similar situation where there aren't many job openings in my wife's field, which is why I took a job that allows me to work anywhere.
