Would you go on a job interview knowing that you are unlikely to accept if offered?

I was contacted by a recruiter about a job out in Tucson, AZ. I didn't solicit for this job. The recruiter contacted me at work of all places. So, I set up a time to listen and did the phone screening process with the hiring manager and now they want to fly me out.

The problem I have with this opportunity is the location. Even though it would likely be a great opportunity for me, it wouldn't be that good of a move for my wife. Tucson isn't that big of a city and it's mostly government contractors out there. It would be hard for her to find work given that the city itself is barely larger than New Orleans. Because of that, one of my requirements to move is any offers that I entertain must be in a fairly large metroplex area so she'll have an easier time trying to find a new job.

The only way I would consider this opportunity is if they are willing to pay a lot more than what I make now (which at a minimum is about 40%) so the move would be beneficial for the family as a whole.

So, should I continue on with this and fly out there knowing that I would likely decline if I'm offered something.

What could it hurt? And who knows what kind of crazy awesome offer could come from it.

Why not hear them out, make a ridiculous counter offer and if they accept, profit. If they dont, then you got away for the weekend. win/win

If they're buying, I'm flying.

Ask for a 30% bump in what you make now.

What's to lose?

Free trip. Possible leverage at your current job. Just tossing out numbers here, say they offer you 25-30% bump over your current salary plus relocation. You can take that to your boss and see if they will bump you 15-20% to keep you. If they won’t then you’re not as valuable as you think and you can start looking local.

And if you're having a hard time dealing with giving the pics.... just treat it more like evidence that you do in fact have a wife.
