My grandfather smoked a pack a day and half a 5th a day from 15 to around 60.
After that he did a cigar a day and two full pours of whiskey.
He lived to 106.

Same. My grandfather smoked (cigs and a pipe late in life) and drank whiskey daily, his entire life. lived to almost 90.

I drink red wine daily.

Christmas Eve, I actually do get drunk. Christmas day, a drink or 2, New Year's Eve, a drink or 2. Typically don't drink SuperBowl. July 4 a drink or 2. Wife's bday in October, 1 drink, my bday in November, 1 Old Fashioned. Again, if that's alcoholism, then I'll accept it.

Sorry I misread the post.

I thought you were drinking that much every single day.

It'd be too much for me and I love brown water. Depends on the person of course but I would think that much hard liquor a day routinely will do some major damage over time. My mother and stepfather drank at least a case of Miller Lite back in the 70s and 80s every day of the week and both are in their late 80s now. He never missed many days of work and I don't know that he ever did because of drinking...but they are both obviously alcoholics, just highly functioning alcoholics. Both stopped cold turkey in their mid 60s without any treatment or meetings. Its different for different people...if I drank that much I'd be hungover all the time and I would weigh about 350.

This is my take..same goes for most things consumed...in moderation it is not a problem, sustained over indulgence over time usually is for most people. You can eat a 1500 calorie meal at Burger king once a month, if you are bent that way, without much damage. Do it everyday and its gonna be a problem for most people.

Medically yeah, that's entirely too much. I was like you at a fifth+ a day/night for a long many years so my perception of what's a lot is skewed

I'm pretty sure you should know better.

Mikes, northgate, and the happy note never gave a 1 ounce shot

Eh, I'd argue that. My grandfather has a glass of red wine every night. He's 98 years old and still lives by myself.

cool, way to take a 1 off and try applying it to the population as a whole. on average that is 100-130 calories extra a day from the 1 glass of wine a day. We have a population that is on average overweight and over 40% are obese....do we really think adding an extra 100 calories a night is healthy? you realize that even if they ate at maintenance calories, that 1 glass of wine adds up to 1lbs of fat gain per month. 30+ over a 30 year period.

and we wonder why america is fat. got fricking idiots that think...hey let me have 2 beers a night, thats healthy....then they dont exercise and go home and have chicken fried steak over mash potatoes and then a brownie with ice cream for dessert while sitting on the couch binge watching some netflix series until midnight. then finally off to shower and bed to do it all over again

Depends on the person and how they metabolize alcohol.

For many, a half pint a night would not do the trick after a few weeks as their tolerance increases.

what a ridiculous argument.

With your silly argument ANYTHING can be considered unhealthy if it causes excess calorie consumption. This shouldn't be news to you if you're so passionate about healthy weight, but in your scenario it's not any one thing that's unhealthy, it's the overconsumption that's unhealthy.

A perfectly fit person could have a cookie a day in a "healthy" capacity. That's not to say cookies are healthy.

My response was to the premise that any amount of alcohol everyday is unhealthy. I'd argue that's not true if the person doing it is healthy in other capacities.

Being healthy in all other aspects of life doesn't make drinking alcohol daily not unhealthy.

You can still be a healthy individual and do unhealthy things. You would just be healthier if you didn't do those unhealthy things.

To clear things up:

quote:

Likewise, a half-pint of alcohol bottle size isn’t exactly half of an actual pint. But it is double a quarter pint of alcohol bottle size. A half-pint in mL is 200 mL or 6.8 ounces. A half-pint of alcohol bottle size contains about four 1.5-ounce shots. The most common half pint of alcohol is the half-pint of Hennessy.

What he's drinking is about 4.5 shots per night. Not a crazy amount but if you drink every night you probably have a problem....I speak from experience. Been sober almost 9 years now.

All I need is a pint a day, if I ever get out of here.

I love whiskey as much as the next guy, but some things don't need to be questioned. For sure it's not "good for you."

Sure if you want to go down that route, anything that's not perfect for your body can be construed as unhealthy. Which is probably the majority of foods in the American diet.

I think the premise of this thread is will it cause chronic negative effects on your overall health.

Which I don't think "any" amount of alcohol everyday will do for an otherwise healthy person.

Well personally I wouldn’t have known it was 4 shots and it was brought up in conversation as half pint so that’s how I worded it. It’s obvious most in this thread don’t know how much is in a half pint including me. There’s been probably 5-6 different answers
