If you don't have a need for the 3rd row then it sounds like your wife is wanting nothing more that to say she has a 3rd row. Get 2 rows and have more room

She has narrowed it down to the Acadia Denali, Explorer Sport, and MDX. Reliability and resale definitely point to the MDX. I think the Explorer and Acadia both look better than the MDX.

Downsized in 2014 because the wife realized she didn't need an SUV the size of my truck. We love ours.
ETA: Chevy Traverse

We liked the look of the sport, but the safety features as well. My wife, like all women, are women. Therefore she will often be driving alone in this thing an likely to hit any and everything on the fricking road. So the safety features such as rearview sensors and oncoming hazard sensor were nice for piece of mind.

Is an Acadia small enough? Those are the shiznit. True captains chairs and backseats that completely fold away to a flat surface.

This. Or, just tell your wife to wish in one hand and shite in the other. Repot back which one filled up 1st.

My sister just got a 16 Explorer. They love it. She used to have a 13, but it got totaled. This time they went with the bucket seats for the middle row so the kids could go back and forth between the two rows without climbing over the seats.

Just bought my wife this exact SUV a couple months ago. Like others have said we don't use the 3rd row much but with power fold it's easy to access if you need it. We've been very please with the SUV. Ride, engine (so far), fit and finish all very nice. The Sport model is really loaded up.

I have a 2015 Sport. I travel a good bit for work and put 44K miles on it so far. Prior to getting it I drove Expeditions for 10 years or so. I love the Explorer...probably more than any vehicle I have owned.

Kept my Black 2004 Yukon, has $175K, still doing it's thing! Hard to get rid of a reliable workhorse that still looks good.......when clean and waxed.......under a street light after a rain......

Good to know that those of you who have the explorer have been happy with them.

My wife and I love her MDX. She had the last gen as well, and the new MDX is far far better. The luxuries inside much better, but the removal of AWD (not necessary) and the much improved gas mileage (old best was 17/20, new is 22/31).
I don't find it mawmaw at all.

We just bought a 2016 Highlander with 2nd row captains chairs. We have two car seats in the 2nd row and our oldest can still get to the 3rd row fairly easily. Once we move to boosters it will be easier. The 2016 Pilot is nice but captains chairs only come with the top of the line Elite.

OP:
Narrow your choices to-
Toyota/Lexus
Honda/Acura
You'll thank me in six years from now like a guy who works for me does about me recommending six years ago for him to look at a Honda Pilot for his wife.

We bought the 2015 Pilot and love it.
The Ford and Chevy options in this class seem to lack interior room. The Explorer exterior profile is my favorite. Not much good about Chevy/GMC.
The Mazda CX-9 isn't bad, they give you some options and take a few away in order to offer a good price. I was in but the wife was out.
The Highlander looks sharp, has great options and is made by Toyota. It also costs quite a few bucks more.

We found with the 2016s the Pilot was much more expensive, at the top end at least, than the Highlander. The price difference was about $5k. But the Pilot was very nice no doubt.
