Most weimaraners I have known were amazingly skidish but I've never owned one.

I think (not certain) that Dalmatians are inclined to health issues...would explain why they are not more popular than they are.

I am trashy so I love pits (but at least I live alone, don't have kids, and have plenty of land so I have room for her).

Labs are always a can't miss dog but it sounds like u may be looking for something less common.

Consider a blue heeled (sp?) ...truly fantastic pooches. About the size of the breeds u mentioned, very distinct personalities, super intelligent as far as dogs go, and loyal like u can't believe.

Portuguese Water Dog

Super smart, great with kids, love to play but not too high energy, have hair instead of fur so no shedding AT ALL, super loving and sweet.

Our Murphy is five years old and I have never found one dog hair. He is around 70 pounds but loves to snuggle up in my lap like he's a 10 pound dog.

Breeders are very selective and I went through more of a process to get my PWD than I did to have actual human children. And they are pricey, $3,000.

We have a lab too and I love her but I will always have a PWD in my house. Best breed ever.

Murphy, PWD (on couch) and Piper, Lab.

British lab. Why the hell would you be considering a damn Dalmatian with a small child? Your screen name a joke?

I do love a Blue Heeler and an Australian Shepard, the latter being better with children. I wouldn't pair a heeler with a child, though.

Blue or Red Heeler (Austrailian Cattle dog) is the answer you're looking for.

This is what I grew up with as a child, and I've never known a more loyal and fantastic dog.

She went with me to every friend's house in the neighborhood.. Was never tied up a day in her life.. We shared Popsicles and ice creams

As you can see, we were best friends. These are all when she was a baby. She got bigger than that... 40 or so lbs.

You wouldn't pair a heeler with a child?! You crazy

After the sweet girl above passed away, my parents got another one and he's just as wonderful as the previous was. They're known for being loyal and great with children.

They will herd you though

Dixie was actually so loyal that her death was the result of a broken heart. We got another dog (rat terrier) when Dixie was 4 and they spent 8 years together when the rat terrier got cancer and died. Dixie cried from her house every night after that. She died a month later.

I can't believe people still shell out hundreds of dollars on "purebred" dogs, when you can go out and adopt a mix for free that will likely end up healthier and live longer.

You need a quick dog like Duke here to take care of your moccasin problem.

I have a Siberian Husky and he is the man! Loves kids, other, people, and dogs. He's the friendliest pet I've ever had.

Incredibly rowdy, and high energetic but wouldn't trade him for the world

We ´inherited´ one of these when I was a wee lad.

Batshit crazy (was a male). Great with immediate family (especially children), psychotic with everyone and everything else.

Ah, good swimmer (never hunted him, though).

Brittany. Smart, zero aggression, 30-60lbs, plenty of energy to play with the kids or will just lay on the floor with them. Lots of energy as pups but ours calmed down at 2. We wouldn't ever consider another breed. All the benefits of lab/golden but in a smaller package, which is what we wanted for an indoor dog. As long as we have a window for her to look out of she will just watch birds all day; doesn't like being outside too much this time of year but just likes to keep an eye out for birds. It's a pointing breed so it's funny to watch her point at everything from squirrels to dragon flys.

Eta:
Only downside is they are sprinters so if the gate is left open ours will dart but she doesn't go too far and only gone for a few minutes but something I hope changes as she gets older because I get nervous with cars.

Also, ours knows how to turn on the Roomba and will turn it on if we ignore her all day and she wants to play.

That's the truth, despite what some people say. They're smarter and more expressive in clever ways than most if not all other dogs, besides maybe a shepherd. They're just really sensitive and need love. Don't get one of you're gonna tie it up outside. Otherwise, get a pretty runt and treat it right. They're the best.

40 to 80 pounds and short hair preferrably. Also good with kids, we have a 2 year old daughter. And we have a big back yard so that's not an issue.

These requirements practically scream Boxer.
