I wish someone would have asked my Dad this question.

My kid wanted to go to boarding school. Out the door at 14 and hasn’t come back yet. Made me a happier person.

There were several boarding schools very close to where I grew up. Lawrenceville Prep, Peddie Prep, The Hun School, Princeton Day School, and etc.. They weren't prisons made for children by any means because they had basically everything a school aged child could ever want. For the most part high school aged children involved in sports, clubs, and activities are barely home during the weekday. I know very often I didn't get home from school (because of school activities) until after 9pm. By often I mean 2 months straight.
As people already mentioned they are expensive. $50k or more per year. The education is high level, and the social circles are elite.
You still see your family often, and it's more like an extended sleep over. I really don't know many people who ever regretted the experience, and I don't know parents who regret it either.
If a family can afford it it's a great experience.

They send them there because it's easier than parenting.

This is the real question.

Honestly, I felt the same way, but as my kids got older I met lots of people that went to boarding schools and sent their children. There are so many reasons to consider it:
Family tradition
Maybe the local schools suck and homeschooling is not an option.
Kid may have more opportunities at the boarding school. Special emphasis on STEM or art or whatever the kid likes.
Sometimes kids in military parents that move frequently are better off at boarding school. they can stay in one school while the rest of the family moves around from place to place.

I know parents who regret sending their kids to Nachitoches. Most kids I know who went there for hs absolutely hated it as well.

Sometimes parents think it's what best for their kid or they just don't feel like dealing with them.

Babies and toddlers are so much cuter and fun to be around than teens?
kind of like having a kitten and it is really cool and then a year later you have a cat and it is not

Boarding school is a chance to teach kids how to act properly in certain circumstances, and to save the shenanigans for others

Are you asking about the Andovers and Exeters, the military schools for those needing some discipline, the school prisons for the wayward little shits that have already murdered one pet and/or set the house on fire by age 10 or all of those?
Close to the truth!
I was sent to military school. There were a mix of kids there, but a number fit that category. Others were because a family situation. There were twin brothers that witnessed their dad ax murder their mom.
It was a mixed experience, but I'll finally accept it as a blessing. I'm a good shot with a rifle and I can fold the heck out of socks and undies.

My son will go to an all boys boarding school, but not as a boarder. Only private school in town...

Lots of reasons, Teenagers and parents are like water and oil. It's just hormones and has nothing to do with parenting skills.
And yeah, I guess some parents aren't good at it so they send their kids to a place where they will get guidance and an education. Is that wrong?
For the record I went to boarding school and it was a great experience. Not for everyone but the friends I made there remain the best ones I have.

I went to Boarding School . Many of the kids were in fact, warehoused by their parents after divorces or disciplinary or academic issues. Others go because they tend to be academically rigorous. Others go because they are an advantage socially. By the time I was 15 I was already basically a little adult that could thrive away from my parents . That had a lot of advantages for me later as it turned out.
All that said, it would be the coldest day in the history of hell that I would send my kids off . It's an emotionally harsh thing for a kid to deal with . It might make you tough as hell - but it comes at a price.

What in the world does this mean??

Because they don't like their kids.

In my case I wanted to go. I researched it, visited there and was very excited to go. Never had a moment of homesickness or feeling like I wasn't wanted at home. I was 13 at the time and very independent.
It was basically like college life. If you were 16 you could have a car and even smoke on campus. Everyone I knew loved it there. There were only a very few who hated it and left.
