Tom Hanks is probably number 1 for the general consensus. I cant argue with that, he's too good.

Leonardo Dicaprio is up there
Charlize Theron is also up there. Her work in Monster was incredible.

Upon a little thought I'd go with Willem Dafoe. Malkavoich, Oldman and Spacey are razor thin seconds.

Dafoe as Max Schreck/Count Orlock in Shadow of the Vampire-1

Malkovich as F.W. Murnau/Dafoe as Max Schreck/Count Orlock-2

Malkovich as F.W. Murnau/Dafoe as Max Schreck/Count Orlock-3

Slavic Vampyre as Kabuki. Amazing movie and performances.

quote:

Day Lewis is unbelievable but he could use a huge performance as more of a regular dude. What a legend though.

Funny, he's got what many actors strive for IMO, gravitas, but could actually use a good comedy or light drama role just to round out his versatility.

I heard John Wilkes Booth was a popular actor in the 1860s.

is it me or does gary oldman always play the same type of character.

i also agree with those that said ed norton is really underrated. about 15 years ago i thought ed norton would be the best actor for the upcoming generation after his performances in primal fear and AHX. Unfortunately, he seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

also, did anybody see the john travolta interview on the actor's guild(i think thats the name of the show) where travolta was making fun of how weird nic cage is.

Heath ledger was finally coming into his own when he went.

John goodman is very underrated.

But one of the best, if not the best...if you cut out the idiotic dream movie...is leo.

From whats eating gilbert grape, to the beach... he commits to every role.

Going back earlier in time:

Gregory Peck
Paul Newman
Bogart
John Wayne
Gary Cooper
Henry Fonda
Jimmy Stewart
Steve McQueen
Marlon Brando

Also, consider that there have been great one-time performances by actors who otherwise probably don't make this list, such as :

Alec Baldwin - The Juror
George Clooney - O Brother Where Art Thou ?
Frank Sinatra - The Man With The Golden Arm
