I disagree and I like all of those guys, although I don't think as highly of DDL as the M/TV board does, generally (and this really should be there, not on the OT, but, whatever).
DiCaprio has really come a long way since Titanic - really good from The Aviator on.
He just hasn't had the number and high quality of the impressive performances as PSH has (and it is tough for leading men to compete - that's what Hanks has going for him - he does support quality work in leading roles like Philadelphia and Forrest Gump).
To a certain degree, the leading man gets the role because the filmmakers see the character as a version of the leading man, plus the automatic draw he brings with his fans. A few really impress from time to time (Clooney, occasionally Pitt, but usually Pitt is more impressive in his support roles, honestly), but for the most part - you give the role to John Wayne, Tom Cruise or Johnny Depp because you see him as the character. Not a situation where you cast Hank Azaria and he disappears into the role of Agador Spartacus, for example.

In the 50's Strasberg's "method acting" became popular and I think the style of acting in film changed forever.

Meh. He's one of the best at choosing films and because of his cachet he's got his pick of the litter. I think there's a lot of actors that could do as good of a job as him in a lot of those roles, they just don't get the chance.
ETA: That being said, I think he did an outstanding job in The Aviator and that film may be the one that nobody could have done better.

Is this past actors or up to and including the present generation? I thought the former but so many responses include present-day or recent actors.

Speaks volumes that he was even given the wide range of roles that he got - he delivered. He delivered in Boogie Nights, Flawless, Charlie Wilson's War - those are very different roles, requiring very different approaches.
He delivered in Lebowski and that would have been a throwaway in just about anybody else's hands.

That and Hollywood parted from the "star" contract players and trained actors from New York started being employed in movies and tv shows in the 60's.

I've been preaching this on the M/TV board. He's fortunate he's in a spot where he can pick who he works with and what project he wants.Most of his movies I think any professional a-lister in hollywood could pull off the same performances.
The only thing I can't agree with you is The Aviator. His boyish looks couldnt convince me he was Howard Hughes.

Tom Hanks would be a good call. "Best actor" to me, means the ability to play many different types of roles and Hanks has done that.
Ed Norton is way underrated and doesn't get enough credit IMO.

His last line of the movie, "The way of the future", and the way he kept repeating it as he looked at himself in the mirror was his best acting of the movie and any movie that year. I wonder how many takes that took.
