From a purely economic standpoint, I think you have to say "yes".

In my book, a family living on 60k is poor.

Most middle class people in America are poor and mired in debt. If you have student loans, rent/mortgage, car payments, daycare/after school activities etc. 60k between 2 people is not enough to live a quality life in America.

My wife and I make a little over 130k in Nashville and I would say we are firmly in the middle of the middle class. After a mortgage, 275 a week for daycare, student loans, 2 car payments and savings there isn't a whole lot of residual income.

60k between 2 people is not middle class. That's poor if there are kids involved.

No wonder there is so much unrest in this country people just are not making enough.

That’s rough. In LA though I could see it. Basically a Walmart cashier and a landscape boy.

Yeah I'd sure hope so.

People are also stupid with their money. You don’t “need” cable, don’t “need” that new Chevy, don’t “need” to go out to eat, don’t “need” that 300-400k house, etc

It’s nice to have but think how much unecessary shite Americans buy.

In your case; $9500 a month is plenty of money if you lived like you made 80k a year.

$60,000 pear year? I don't think there's anyway I could live on that with two kids in daycare and a house note.

I don’t think that definition is useful.

If I’m writing policy, I don’t want to group middle income, but culturally working class families, with middle class families.

Cable is like $50, but I agree with the rest of your post.

60k baws and their new trucks is what kills me.

Real estate and rent are expensive here. 300k to 400k house doesn't buy what it used to. We didn't buy until 2016 which was about 2to 3 years too late.

fricking daycare is ridiculous though. You can't avoid it if you don't live near any family. 1100 dollars a month for 1 child is robbery. It's not even that great of a daycare.

I don't see how people pay for multiple kids in daycare or private school.

Lol I don’t have kids yet but I see what you mean.

My post wasn’t meaning to call you out or anything but I know plenty of people who make 80k but live like they make 300k. It amazes me. Have a family member like this. They make about 130k a year but live like they make double that. Apple watches, iPhone 8, Mercedes, brand new Tahoe, always going out to eat, new shoes, season football tickets, etc. They stay broke 24/7 but bitch and complain when something breaks that they “don’t have any money”

You have to be about $120,000 to be able to live middle class in Baton Rouge once you count having to pay for two kids to go to private school. 3 or more kids in private school and daycare and you're better off moving to Texas.

Some of you must be terrible with money. I live a pretty solid middle class life on a little less than that in the Seattle metro. And I have two kids.

I do buy a lot of electronics it's my one vice. I usually sell my previous phone, but I usually get 2 or 3 cellphones every year. I buy a lot of unnecessary connected home crap I really don't need.

Life is just expensive and working for only mere survival honestly doesn't feel like a life worth living.

If we were to cut our income in half that would essentially be all we would be able to do is survive.

so thats like, what ~$45-48k after taxes?

seems near impossible to raise a family with that - these numbers always shock me

I couldn't imagine having a household income of $60,000 in 2017.

It's not hard to surpass this though. My wife and I made $72,000 in our first year of marriage and I dropped out of college with little skills. We are up to $85,000 only two years later and potentially looking to make an even larger leap in the next year.

South LA has a large uneducated working force making high wages because of the big business oil companies, but not everywhere is so fortunate. Having said that, a single person with a college degree should be able to make about that income by themselves by the time they are in their late 20s or early 30s.

Keep at it! The wife and I have seen 100k and 200k jumps in one year house hold income.
