To put this in perspective, the median household income for the world is $9,733 according to the latest statistics I could find. Even Germany's median household income was only $33,333.

A household income of $59,036 (the figure in the OP) would put a vast majority of households in the world in the top 1 or 2 percent of richest people in the country.

God Bless America!

This kind of information is usually a bit shocking to those who think they're "upper-middle class" with their $150k combined household income. For whatever reason, people often underestimate how good they've got it. $150k household income is nearly the 88th percentile, yet these people act like they're barely getting by on that income.

90% of posters here like to talk about their middle class upbringing while mom and dad brought in $45k per year in 1980, enough to put you in the top 20% of household income.

This is pretty much what I was trying to say, but much more concise.

several countries have similar household averages.

but props for comparing us to those 3rd world numbers.

solid logic, for sure.

If you have a household income of $150,000 and are living paycheck to paycheck, then there needs to be some serious financial counseling done because that shouldn't be happening.

Most people I know, while they appear well off having a nice home and vehicles and toys are a couple missed paychecks from being in major debt or are already struggling with debt.

I'm 40, single, and in the 90th percentile. Granted I save quite a bit of money, but it confuses me when I see those with families making significantly less than me, yet have a nicer home, sending kids to private schools, paying for travel ball, driving $60K vehicles, going on vacations, etc.

Anyone making more than 100k in the South and thinking that isn't fairly well off is an extremely poor manager of money.

There is no "typical" household.

Everything depends on where you live.

Sorry but median income =\= middle class.

That's exactly what it should mean, but people have warped middle class to mean anything less than elite. Even if you say middle class is the 30th to 70th percentile, you're talking about household incomes that range from $33k to $90k. If you're making $120k combined, you're not in the vicinity of middle class in this country.

Ummmm no. I need to call my boss and tell him I need a 200k raise and that its "not that much different". Differences in my life if I made 200k more a year.

- My home would be paid off right now instead of the 30 year mortgage I have (I did put down 20% but still)
- I wouldn't be driving a 19 year old car with body panels that are 3 different colors
- My retirement account would be much healthier
- I could actually take vacations
- College fund for my kids would actually be funded

You're a little detached from reality is you think 20k a month isn't much of a difference for a high school teacher.

It was hyperbole, but you know the attitude I'm referencing. People on here that make that kind of money love to say they're just hard working middle class folk. They may be hard working, but they're not middle class no matter how you want to slice it. They're not upper middle class either.

the problem with all this is its based on reported numbers. a fair number of those are fake as the news and a fair portion of the remainder are incorrect because people are just fricking dumb. people making money arent contorting to report every dime. to the contrary, many of them have learned how to look poor on paper. its about as good as arguing of reported athletic department revenues. its after they have lied and loopholed themselves into the smallest possible liability.

My wife and I combine for about $140,000 a year. We live in Arabi, so we are doing pretty well. We are 27 and 26 respectfully.

I always enjoy the "you need 200k to live middle class in BR" posts. I mean, if that's someone's threshold you know damn well their wife is spending just about every dollar they make.

Is the American middle class better off than ever? Discuss.

I think it depends upon what you think better off means.

For most people raising a family it takes two incomes, which means there will be a lot more time spent making money than perhaps enjoying a quality standard of life. Quality time with family takes a hit most times, as does food and overall health, and happiness, because hell, everyone is out chasing the carrot. We hand off the child raising to other people and things, and then scratch our heads when the kids are overweight, unhappy, unsatisfied, and often times dysfunctioning strangers.

I’m just not so sure that is “Better Off” than years past as it is having more stuff perhaps, but you can’t stop now. Gotta keep getting new stuff to replace the old outdated stuff. It’s a cycle we find ourselves in that I think will eventually prove itself at some point to most people to be unsustainable and unrewarding.

Class, outside of strict economic terms is just so subjective that people just define it to where it makes them feel they are above people they don't like.
