Lol at comparing standing in a crowd of drunks begging for someone to throw you shitty plastics beads to hunting and fishing.

I don't care for it. I liked it when I was a kid but as I've grown up, I've come to realise that its not about the kids anymore so I try to avoid going to parades.

this year i have won mardi gras. set up shop with 8-10 friends on the barricade in front of desi vega on st charles. free bathroom awesome "parade" food and plenty of space to sit back and hang out for the afternoon parades. got crowded for Endymion but still was able to keep our buffer zone with the ice chests and chairs. after its all done, walked 2 blocks drove down Barone and was home to metairie in less than 20 min.

This. Once I reached legal drinking age, I quit going.
I don't get it.

Last year we did today's parades the right way too. We were on Magazine (close to Napoleon) at a tattoo shop that the owner's wife is a nurse that I work with. Bathrooms, food, space to set up that was only a 2-3 people deep and MOONSHINE!

Back in the day (starting in undergrad - over 25 years ago), I was pretty hard core about it. Hit the major NO parades (Sunday Night and MG day). Partied hard, fought for beads, lots of self-debasement.

Had kids...focus changed. Stayed sober and went to more "family friendly" parades (Metairie, Houma) when we've gone to parades (we've also gone on some vacations - Disney once [never again at MG]).

I suspect that once the kids are gone, may trend back to my original approach, with some maturity and a better bankroll.

I'll bet you're just loads of fun to be around. And you probably really think you are.

If a person can't enjoy a little Mardi Gras and let their hair down every few years then they - and those who must tolerate them day in and day out - have my sympathies.

I think it's the thing I think I enjoy the most. Mardi Gras is the people-watching Super Bowl.

I like Mardi Gras, especially if you have a good set-up (i.e. friend with a house or apartment along the route, parking spots, reserved space, bathrooms, etc.) It's a great celebration and tradition that distinguishes south Louisiana from other parts of the country. We should work to preserve it as much as possible.

There are some things that annoy me about it:
-You find a lot of people who get really excited about it but are just there for the party and have no idea what it actually celebrates, nor do they care.
-People who make a big deal about being in parade and being named queen or king of some podunk parade like it is some kind of significant life accomplishment.
-Nolatards who look down on anything Mardi Gras that doesn't involve New Orleans, like New Orleans invented Mardi Gras or something (some people do think this).
