The anti-mardi gras folks in this thread don't appear to be doing it right. When i lived in new orleans, friends would come in town and we'd go from party to party all around town. If we even ended up in the quarter it'd be to go to someone's house with a balcony on a non-Bourbon street.
No driving, no Bourbon and actually didn't spend tons of time at the parades. I would walk a couple blocks to St Charles for more family-oriented evenings, and always had a blast.
It can definitely be horrible and trashy, but doesn't have to be.

The only thing I like about Mardis Gras is throwing beads in the sousaphone, and the occasional titties I happen upon.

When I lived in Louisiana I was kinda meh about Mardi Gras. I didn't hate it by any means. Now that I live out of state, Mardi Gras is my favorite vacation.

I like the idea of it, but the execution with the shitheads in the crowds pisses me off. Then again, I'm not a big fan of crowds to begin with.

We do mardi gras in Bay St Louis. It's a bunch of republicans (as in financially stable people, not necessarily just white people) and it's a great family atmosphere. It's fun when you're able to seclude yourself from trashy folk.
