Misapprehended my point. Regulatory state today constrains and politics smothers creative production. But the free market and statist policies delivered von Braun to USA, and many others.

LINK

Bretton Woods global econ order was Keynesian. Reaping the bitter yield today of bad agreements 75 yrs ago.

Hazlitt tried to warn, as did Hayek... They were Geniuses... Ignored and sacrificed at the altar of global governance...

Fatal Conceit indeed.

Uh, there will probably be at least one human on Mars by 2030 at the latest Musk is talking about putting a human on/orbiting Mars within 5 years.

That's pretty much unheard of. I honestly think that to some degree his mental strength has played a factor in him living as long as he has.

For many people who get ALS, they go from living a "normal" life to not being able to do anything for themselves and it gets to the point where people don't have the will to live anymore so they just shut down, he has focused on his work and had a purpose. That's the only thing I can come up with as for as how long he has lived.

Those things were available 30+years ago tech wise... Where have you been? Not new in any sense... Politics over markets... Dead hand of the past stymies tech you could have used, many years ago

That's 13 years from now. Every President since Nixon has been saying we'll have a man on Mars in 20 years. I remember reading books in my school library that were saying we would have a person on Mars by 1996. I argued with my parents saying this dated book said it would happen. 1996 came and went without anyone on Mars.

I am this board's biggest advocate for going to Mars, but if I were to personally plan it all with unlimited funds... we would not be there by 2030. My very most optimistic vision of a man stepping foot on Mars is 2035, and that's if we start today.

There's so much more shite we have to do. First we need a Moon Base and test human survival from there. Then we need to test a human outside of Earth's orbit for well over a year. Then we need to orbit Mars itself before landing there. Then we need to develop the equipment that can harness sunlight from that far for people to survive.

If the first Martians are to have a one way trip and then die there, then we could probably get there soon. But there's so much to consider, namely the mental health of people who go to Mars and them being qualified enough to be a part of the trip. Someone going all Jack Torrence is a real concern. Seriously think of this as a person if you were stuck on this mission. It would drive 95% of humanity insane.

So 2030 the latest? No. That's beyond best case unless they don't return, and I am very concerned what the colonists will do with no law, society, and being about 30 minutes away from having a single round trip text would do.

I've conversed with Musk.....awkwardly smart. Guy is also very passionate about his work.

That said, he's definitely in the discussion

And every time we have this discussion, I just don't see Mars as a viable option to send a human. Very little resources. We would have to carry the majority of our needs. Like another poster said, I think our exploration is going to be different than how we think. AI, augmented reality, etc. We need a world similar to our own, and a faster way to get there. Mars gives us no advantage when you consider the distance we have to cover for other earth like planets.

And talking via computer doesn't make one a genius. Hawking is overrated. Cambridge gave us the Philby ring and other assorted socialist dandies.

Hawking said Higgs Boson particle did not exist.

I hate he has a disease, what could have been still clouded by his very public statist views.

Quite odd for a physicist, scientist, considering he was a child in socialist Britain, apparently still socialist today too. Must be the NHS influence...

No one will care if it's AI. We need a man there.

What do you mean? The only other earth like planet nearby is Venus, that is hotter than frick and has the atmospheric pressure of the bottom of the ocean.
