In the information age, it's both easier and harder to be a polymath.

Those things were available 30+years ago tech wise...

In 1987 the Acorn Archimedes PC came out.. 32-bit, running at 8 MHz, 4.5+ MIPs (Millions of Instructions Per second)... 2017 Intel Core i7 6950x.. 3.0 GHz, 317,900 MIPS...

Let's not be foolish.

You are talking about public releases of things assuming you get access upon discovery and market perfection. Dont be deceived, that tech was known, perfected and shelved for many years before the masses thought they had a new birthright from on high.

You don't understand IP, govt- Defense complex, then when they are through the politics of ownership and getting to IPO... Can take years beyond security embargo

I am this board's biggest advocate for going to Mars, but if I were to personally plan it all with unlimited funds... we would not be there by 2030. My very most optimistic vision of a man stepping foot on Mars is 2035, and that's if we start today.

They started working on this in like 2002.

quote:

There's so much more shite we have to do. First we need a Moon Base and test human survival from there. Then we need to test a human outside of Earth's orbit for well over a year. Then we need to orbit Mars itself before landing there. Then we need to develop the equipment that can harness sunlight from that far for people to survive.

There's no real reason to test life on mars on a lunar colony outside of a short return trip. Mars is rich in fuel as is.. and some very simple tech, a generator, and lots of supplies sent before/after will cover them for multiple years.

quote:

If the first Martians are to have a one way trip and then die there, then we could probably get there soon. But there's so much to consider, namely the mental health of people who go to Mars and them being qualified enough to be a part of the trip. Someone going all Jack Torrence is a real concern. Seriously think of this as a person if you were stuck on this mission. It would drive 95% of humanity insane.

If you send someone in there early 30's.. there is a very real opportunity for a return trip. Other than that.. probably not. And these aren't presidents saying we are going to Mars.. here's a recently published paper by Musk that basically outlines the SpaceX vision LINK

What are you considering this era? Carl Sagan died 21 years ago but was after the Einstein Era.

If you are taking about legit geniuses like Einstein, Fermi, Bohr,...etc then they are not going to be household names. They would include among others:

David Wineland
Konstantin Novoselov
Frank Wilczek
Charles Kao

If you are talking about really bright people who were also business geniuses, then:

Bill Gates
Elon Musk
Steve Jobs
Jeff Bezos

Tyson is the Carl Sagan of the current generation, a entertainer/communicator of science, but he has done nothing of significance in the field that would set him apart from any other physicist at a average university.
