Personally, I joined the military at 17 because I knew I didn't want to go to college just yet and had to get out of the house. Worked out for me just fine, got a BS and MS mostly on Uncle Sam's dime, became an officer eventually, and now am retired.
Ask your son if he is truly wanting to do the college thing right now. Some aren't, some are. In any case I wish you both good luck and God Speed.

If he is debating college or military have him contact Marion Military Institute to get information on their SAP program
Service Academy Preparation
If he plays their game the way they ask him to play, he will go from one or two years at MMI to one of the Service Academies.
The academies lose students each year and backfill their classes from schools like MMI.
Good way to get a year at MMI free and entrance into a military academy. When you graduate, your diploma says West Point or naval Academy or Air Force Academy, just like the guy smart enough to get an appointment right out of high school.
Plus a year or two at MMI will place him in a structured situation while he grows up a little more.
MMI was once private, but is now a part of Alabama University system.

Northwestern Prep is excellent also. They have about a 95% acceptance rate to service academies with their students. About $9k for 1 semester and then your son needs to find another school to attend in the spring.
