Which would you prefer for your 18 year old son?

Who is graduating high school in 3 months? Obviously it's his choice, I'm just curious what you would personally prefer for your son in the situation.
Spending the next 4 years obtaining a degree from LSU, probably in Business Management.
Spending the next 4 years in the Navy or Air Force and learning a skill.

Send your son to an expensive liberal arts school whose reputation does not back up their high tuition, such as Montevallo University or Loyola University.
Have your son major in something useless like sociology or psychology.

Agree with the 1st part because he can become an officer with the degree but why no business admin degree? It's usually one of the 5 best degrees every year.

If you like the military path, do Air Force ROTC while getting an engineering degree. Then do your time in the Air Force. You will get a lot paid for, be ranked high (even possibly fly fighter jets and awesome stuff like that) when you graduate, and you will be highly sought after if/when you decide to go back to civilian life. I never though to do it, but graduated with a guy who was headed to flight school when we were finished. Was jealous of him.

College. No business admin. Might as well graduate in general studies.

What kind of grades does he have?

1. Don't do business administration. If one is going to get a degree from the college of business, let it be accounting, ISDS, or something else that's at least a little less generic.
2. It depends on his grades. If his grades aren't exactly stellar from high school (meaning I would be paying his way in college), and he has some motivation issues I would give him three options:
1. You pay for college for the most part yourself (I'll pick up 1/3).
2. Go to trade school to become a welder, iron worker, pipefitter, QA/QC, occupational safety specialist, HVAC technician, auto mechanic, carpenter, plumber, electrician, ect, and I'll pay for it.
3. Go to the military to get the GI Bill.

Just finished Army ROTC, and highly recommend this.

Most of the guys I was in school with who were in the military had a very high level of self discipline and were good students. It'll also give him some time to mature before wasting time and money in college, considering the fact that he wants to get a Business Admin degree

like kingbob says, depends on his grades.
But if he has great grades why not try to get in one of the academies? If he could get into the naval academy and majors in something like engineering then he will prolly be set for life.

If my son was truly deciding between both, I would offer a compromise of ROTC.. My preference is pretty irrelevant but would really depend on my son and his current maturity.. Whatever I felt would give him the best path would ultimately my preference/recommendation.

I'm sure this has worked out well for a lot of people, and I'm all for fighting for our country , but I have seen people do this and come back with no skills or jobs ahead of them. My opinion, don't push this.

It all depends on the kid. When I was graduating high school, I entertained the Naval Academy. If a kid has great grades and a solid work ethic, then he shouldn't have any trouble getting a free (or close to free) ride at a relatively prestigious university.
In my opinion, those who go to the military generally fall into one of the following:
1. Family tradition of service in the Armed Forces (born with "star-spangled eyes")
2. want to go to college but can't afford it and don't have the grades, economic, or minority status for scholarships.
3. Kids who have no where else to go.
4. People who lack discipline and need to learn it.
If a kid is smart enough to get into one of those prestigious universities, but skated through high school on pure intellect, a service academy may not be a bad idea. It gives all of the advantageous of a free top-flight education plus the character building elements of the military.
The issue is "fun". If a student wants to have too much "fun" in college, then he has no business being there and will likely fail at it. If a student wants to have fun, but not too much, he'll enjoy himself and likely succeed. If a student just cares about getting that degree, then he will surely succeed no matter where he is. A service academy is great for the first and last (especially if the last lacks economic means), but is terrible for the 2nd.
