Now that I'm a little older and have two young kids, I'm pretty sure I would just call the cops and/or shout at him in hopes of running him off. I know that sounds pussified, but I'd like to watch my kids grow up. This thing about Will Smith never seeing his kids grow up tears at my heart. I don't want that to be me, or my kids.

It's smart. Availing yourself of a situation primarily because you're armed, rather than because of the gravity of the crime involved, is almost always the wrong decision, I think.

Would I fight for other people/SO/kids in a potentially deadly situation even if I was unarmed? Yes. That action has little to do with whether I have a worthwhile weapon. Would I confront some people breaking into my car if I didn't have a weapon? Probably not. Nothing in my car is worth putting myself at that disadvantage.

There was a guy in Hoover, Alabama who got killed confronting some thugs robbing his car a month or two ago. While this scenario makes it seem like we have the awareness upper hand, there are only a handful of outcomes from confronting someone in such a situation and about half of them are bad in a life-changing way.
Granted, it's a message board and probably 90% of guys wouldn't react the way they say they would, but I'm always amazed at how so many gun toting OTers talk about shooting people and just assume they're always the best shot, will never miss, and there's no chance that, ya know, they may actually get shot themselves. It's a strange thing to see posted over and over.

They seem to almost relish the opportunity to shoot someone. I'm certainly not saying there aren't times where it's what you need to do, but I'm not sure all of the consequences are always being weigned when firing off posts.

Yeah, my cars are in a locked garage so my stance is a bit different. I feel like if they did all that to get to my cars, they would just as soon come inside.

If my car is on the street, I'm not playing Billy Badass. I have insurance and the correct number of orifices in my body already.

Yep, it's situational. If it's a group of thugs that look like they're not going to limit their actions to your car, that'd be a different situation too.

buddy of mine in college caught someone breaking into his truck one night and managed to sneak up on him in the act. he beat THE HELL out of the guy (as in broken bones and internal bleeding) and left him laying there. someone driving through the parking lot called the cops when they saw the guy laying on the ground - buddy had already gone back inside and no one saw him administer the beating.

Pretty much what I said in another thread.

Never engage or escalate when you have access to weapon.

Obviously, in a self-defense scenario, this changes.

It's a dangerous mindset in the gun toting community. Thankfully, most of the more popular writers, blogs, message boards etc. warn against it fervently.

When I first became interested in carrying, it was told to me that I should become LESS confrontational when carrying a gun. More is on the line. Getting into a fight while carrying means there may be a gray line as to when a common brawl becomes a firearm situation. Of course, another party in a confrontation discovering you're armed can change things for the worse as well.

Ive Been in this exact situation.
I was going through a divorce and was a week away from moving. I had the phone disconnected a day earlier back before cell phones were portable.
I was lying on the couch about 100am watching The Hellfighters and working on some Jack Daniels. I kept hearing this noise outside a subtle click click a pause then click click. I got up and looked out the window and someone was in my car and pulling the handle on my neighbors car.(apartments with spaces out front) I grabbed my 45 and stuck it in my jeans and went out front. At this point both guys were in my neighbors car. I said hey man WTF? 1 guy responded huh, i said do you know whos car that is he says yeah its my grandads. I said really and started towards him. He jumps up and starts coming towards me so I drew down on him and he starts whinning you cant do that. I said cant do what and he says wave that gun around. So i said really why dont you and you buddy take off running and pray I dont smoke your arse before you do. So this fool starts in again on how i cant do nothing and its his grandads car again and takes another step towards me.I cracked him in the face with the pistol and stomped his skinny arse till I thought I might kill him. Si I back off and say you want some more or do you wanna get the f outta here cause this is you last chance. So he drags his sorry tail up and walks away with his buddy who stood by an watched him take a beating. And 20 yards away he starts in on the I shouldnt this and I shouldnt that again. So i said you know what F it I shoulda shot ya now im going too and cracked on off into the grass. They finally got the message to get out of dodge and scurred off. My neighbors lights come on and he runs out and says what happened. So I say well the grandson you dont have was in your car and went I told him tobsplit he gave some shite. My neighbor goes to his car abd checks it out and finds a bag of crack and a kitchen knife on the drivers side floor board left by his grandson.
Moral of the story is if you can legally shoot the punk do it and be done.

I'd probably wait until he got out of my truck and then shoot him. I live in BFE and people shoot guns all the time so hearing gunshots wouldn't even phase my closest neighbor. Then I'd drag the body back into the woods and leave it for the scavengers and go back to sleep.

Yeah your right there. I was just thinking that was 20 years ago next month when that happened. Funny dude acted like he was entitled to break into my shite. Must've been the begining of the BLM types and whiners we have today. Only good part about that divorce was I finally got to chill and watch a JW with JD

It has probably already been stated, but you have the right to protect your life, not your property. Someone breaking into your car, when you are not in it, doesn't give you the right to shoot them.

Which goes right out the window when you confront said person breaking into your property and he "violently jumps out of your vehicle and walks towards you as you feared for your life".

My grandfather caught someone breaking into his car and he was armed and he got shot 6 times by the thief before he could do anything.

He was fine though afterwards from what I'm told. 1 to the arm, one to the leg, one to the shoulder, and a couple more to the stomach (my dad loves talking about the joys of a colonoscopy bag while dining)
