Unless you have ever had stuff stolen or your house broken into you won't understand what a shitty feeling it is. You feel pissed and vulnerable. IF caught red handed there should be stiff penalties, more so then there are right now

Hold him at gunpoint til the cops get there. In a perfect world, I'd kill him and get away with it but that's not how it works.

It's just a car, people
Call the cops. I'd likely be armed, but there's almost zero change he's looking to come inside as well.

My grandfather caught someone breaking into his car and he was armed and he got shot 6 times by the thief before he could do anything.

The key is, you're not grabbing your gun to shoot the person breaking into your car, that probably wouldn't be lawful. But you are grabbing your gun to protect yourself as you confront the attacker, which is perfectly legal.
If he attacks you or makes a movement indicating that he has a gun or something else to make you fear death or serious bodily harm, you're probably okay as long as you can show that. But the more vague the threat is, the greater are your chances for legal problems even prison.
If he takes off running and you shoot him in the back, you're most likely going to prison.
Best bet: get your gun, announce loudly and firmly with command to get on ground from a distance of 8-12 feet, but if he runs, let him go. Or you can turn on lights, yell from inside or whatever.

You're also assuming you can get within 8-12 feet easily.
I think if we're talking the "best bet", there are scenarios where a gun isn't drawn that would be ideal.

So what are you gaining by confronting him? You are gonna let him run anyway, if he chooses.
Risk/Reward here. Any slight risk to my life isn't worth saving anything in my car, or even the car itself.

I caught two guys trying to break into my roommate's car once. I woke up one night around 3:00 am and heard someone walking around and whispering outside in the driveway. I looked out my bedroom window and saw a white guy and a black guy trying to pry down the window of my roommate's car. I hit my bedroom window with my hand, they turned around and looked at me with an "oh crap" look on their faces, and then ran off. They jumped in their car that was parked down the street and drove off quickly.

Well there is about zero chance the perp will comply with that request. More than likely they will haul arse. However, if they decide to engage than that's the chance to get some payback. However, prep your anus for a trip to the police station (might get to visit a cell), a mountain of lawyer fees, and basically 2 or 3 years or more of pure hell.
Best bet is to fire a round in the air as the jackarse is running away.

I would call the cops and tell them to come pick up the dead body of the guy that broke into my car as I sit inside with my gun. The cops always seem to show up faster when you tell them there is a dead body as opposed to someone is stealing my shite.

Not sure where in my post I made it out to be so simple. Just said it's what I'd do. If he ran I wouldn't shoot him. I'd just get 911 back on the line, if we had hung up.

Didn't mean to down vote that... Anyone else having up vote issues?

Firing guns into the air in a residential area is also generally a terrible idea, but otherwise I agree with your assessment
