Its a nuisance but also one of those things you shrug off because you know it could be worse. I would just start dropping subtle hints.
"oh hey, how are you? it feels great outside so the wife and I are just trying to spend some quality time. You know what I mean?"
Also, you live in Alabama. why is your home so close to the next home? Seems pointless. Are you in an urban area, near some sort of downtown or university?

Sounds like he needs some friends. Invite some other older neighbors over and hope he starts going over to their house all the time. Seems like they might have more common things to talk about. They might be fading and need a "know it all."

This may be one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't scenarios, it all depends on how reasonable of a man he is, and if he would understand you telling him there are times you just want it to be you and your family.

It's not. If I had to guess, Lyle's in one of those newer neighborhoods (usually garden homes) where house access is supposed to be hidden off alleys in the back. Keeps parking and much neighborhood traffic off the streets in the front. No unsightly driveways mucking up the views of cookie cutter lawns.
Edit - LSULyle, just move the grill to the front porch.
