Eat a lot of nuts, particularly raw almonds, daily. Don't eat sugar candies. Take a vitamin called Nature Made CholestOff daily (its cheap and sold over the counter everywhere). Increase your cardiovascular exercise routine, even if that just means brisk walking. Don't eat fast food at all (except maybe occasionally subway and Taco Bell). Cut down on Dairy products. Don't drink any carbonated drinks at all. You can still drink beer and eat a normal diet. That'll cut you down to 200 in about 6-10 weeks.

First thing. Tell you Dr to do a NMR test. It's a better predictor of risk. I wouldn't put a ton of stock in your cholesterol #'s. Lipid panel is a 60 year old test that is wrong roughly 50% of the time.
Before taking pill, you can try diet and exercise.

There's approx 100 grams of sugar in one bowl of honey nut cheerios, but continue eating your "health food".

Considering honey nut cheerios have 9g per serving, even with the sugar from the milk, that is just not accurate.

Having said that I am in agreement about lowering sugar and carb intake. It is one of the most important things you can do for your overall health.

I love cereal, so I usually eat some grape nuts and Life cereal mixed together with unsweetened almond milk. Very little sugar and some carbs, but nothing drastic.

A serving size is 3/4 of a cup. Who eats that little in a bowl? Most people eat double that.

22 grams of carbs in one serving x 2 = 44 grams of carbs

1 cup of whole milk equals 12 grams of carbs. Who eats 1 cup? Let's say 1.5 about average.

44+18= 62. I was off so youre right.

Go get some red rice yeast supplements. Natural way to lower cholesterol, cut back on wheat, starches. Exercise regularly and you'll be fine

Change your diet and eat healthier foods.
Only helps one part of the cholestrol equation, which is why looking at total cholestrol is pointless. Your ratio of Triglycerides/HDL is the most important factor

my total cholesterol level was almost 400 at 34 years of age. i was running multiple times a week and probably had around 15% body fat, mostly vegetarian diet with little eating poorly. that was almost a year ago.

should've seen the look on my doctor's face when he saw those numbers.

wonder what the modified diet looked like? probably low in saturated fat and sugar, almost certainly not the diet you are suggesting.

You are retarded to not take a statin. There is soooo much good data on statins that it should be in the water. There is way more to just your cholesterol number. The breakdown of your lipoproteins will tell you way more and statins and niacin are the really the only proven ways to change that. It has also been proven that diet really has no effect on cholesterol. Yes, some people do respond to diet but the overall general population will not respond.

In September of 2010, my Triglyceride level reached 8,120. Eight Thousand one hundred and twenty.

Had pancreatis in the hospital for 4 days. Fasted for three days and the levels dropped to 2000. Pancreatis due to elevated triglycerides is no joke. More so than Cholesterol.

I take fish oil and trilipex and Vytorin. Plus, I was advised to walk 20-30 minutes per day. Over use of Alcohol can trigger pancreatis in some people. I don't drink though.

I work with Triglyceride levels of over 2000. Please dont come to my lab. Like working with milk. Of course, thats not a what-you-eat issue (mostly).

Sorry for your pancreatis tho, heard that was painful stuff.

Yep

I will add:

Dietary intake of cholesterol has no impact on your serum levels. Serum levels are produced endogenously (by the body) mainly due the facts below. OK to eat eggs, shrimp, grass fed beef and other high quality fats

Triglycerides and HDL are the most important metrics. Processed and excess carbs have the biggest impact on your triglycerides. Consider going on a carb restricted diet until a more proper body composition is obtained. At that point, add carbs back on days you exercise/train (feed your activity level)

To raise HDL (which is essentially a marker for insulin sensitivity), lay down as much healthy metabollically active tissue (muscle) while sacrificing the harmful metabollically active tissue (fat). High intensity exercise/strength training/ judicious cardio

A less inflammtory provoking diet also matters (higher ratio of omega 3s). The typical US diet is dominated by omega 6 (vegetable oil). Convert to using coconut oil (speller expressed which has minimal smell) for cooking and olive oil for topping things.

I take a half 10 mg per day Crestor with a baby aspirin and a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. If you don't want to take pills, find foods with good cholesterol, as it acts as a "detergent" to clean out the bad cholesterol, with exercise. Good luck.
