I like rowing them gears, hoss.
I'm not fast enough to get the benefits of auto, anyway.

I have a GT-R with flappy paddles. Mine is fully built with stupid HP and there is so much going on when you mash the gas, it's enough to hold on and steer. The shifts are really fast and work well, even with big turbos like mine has, it never falls out of boost. It's an amazing trans. I used to track it before I went power crazy and being able to shift without upsetting the car was awesome.
Back on topic, I really like the new mustangs for a every day sports car.

What's so much better, IYO, with a 3rd pedal and rowing gears?
It the past, it was a feel of more connection to the car, controlling the gear at all times, keeping the right gear coming into and out of a turn. Then you have to deal with that hassle all the time, in traffic, etc. but it was worth it, because the alternative could not deliver what you required.
That's simply not true anymore. The autos are designed to hold the gear, moreso with paddles, unless you tell it to change. In my opinion, it's essentially a clutch less manual, which is the best of all worlds.

Honestly, if it was a DD, I would opt for the auto.
Your post is spot on though, it is more about connecting with the car. And yes, autos today, esp. In a performance car, are excellent.

I think they're mechanically identical to performance manuals with solenoid actuators integrated with the ECM to essentially do everything a very experienced driver does with 3 pedals and a handshaker.
The advantage is that humans can't row gears as fast as they can push a button no matter how short the throw is.
If you're not tracking the car with money on the line though, frick that. That's a frickload of extra money and maintenance for something you'll never take advantage of. You'll rarely get to run a car like it's meant to be run. The rest of the time you've got to make street driving fun.

It's manual or nothing. My truck and my wife's sedan are both standards, and owning two different ones really helps you understand the intricacies of the attraction. My wife's is more of a sport inspired setup and mine is glorious in 4wd. Not owning, or being able to acquire another, a manual would be heartbreaking to me. It HAS to be a manual no matter what.
