Do beats come with a sticker?

It's a total ripoff. The best format to hear sound in is FLAC. A FLAC file is the direct rip off of the mixer that recorded the track. FLAC songs run at about 300-500kbs (sometimes more). The problem is, WinAmp is the only player (At least that I know of) capable of playing the FLAC format on your phone. mp3's (A dumbed down version for space saving purposes) run at 128kbs. And the the songs you get off of itunes are AAC at 95kbs. Pandora, and all other streaming sites like it, broadcast in 95kbs.
Long story short; If you listen to mp3's or stream music you will get the same quality from beats as a $14 pair of Sony earbuds. So they're just a status thing. They're the Jordans of the new millennium.

Same reason why Yetis are $400 and Jordan's are $250, because people will pay that for them for the name.
This. Another poster mentioned it as well. The only reason they cost that much is because people will pay that much

Actually I think they do.

While I do believe that good headphones cost more - I've spent as much as $100 for studio quality monitors - a significant portion of this markup is based solely on the marketing name - akin to the high multiples of cost of production for certain models of basketball shoes, designer clothes/handbags, certain wristwatch lines and even automobiles. People are paying for a brand and a name, so that others will be impressed at their ability to pay such multiples of the cost of production. It forms a cycle of envy/ostentatious display of resources.

lolwut
Are you inferring that 128kbs music sounds the same through my Senny 598s as through my cheapo earbuds? Or that FLAC would? Because that's obviously not true at all.

The only thing that makes them worth $400 is that people are willing to pay $400.
another "bingo"
people confuse cost with MV...of course things reach a point where they surpass equilibrium

pretty much
if supply and demand dictates they sell it for $400 and people still pay it, then good.
as much as I laugh because they're an easier target in terms of being a totally marketing driven fad, anyone here who drives a range rover is guilty of the same thing. Everyone gets reeled in by marketing at one point or another. consciously or unconsciously

Jesus you economics dorks the guy probably knows that the market is what sustains that pricing.

threads like these often confuse "cost" and "value"
and I also don't know if he does, otherwise why would he ask
if I wanted to answer his question posed literally
parts
labor
shipping
advertising costs
and the various costs associated with just staying in business, and this is weighed against demand...satisfied with a non dorky answer?
the $100 pair of jeans people wear are composed of a couple of yards of fabric, thread, snaps/button, and the inexpensive overseas labor
but then you have to ship it to the US from a country we most likely don't have a free trade agreement with, so shipping + taxes, then you have to transport it to distribution. Then to retail. If you have retail stores, then it gets really expensive. Do they have catalogs they print and ship? it's almost impossible to imagine all the various costs from the outside looking in...and I hate people speaking as if the consumer is a moron.
long story short, the OP is ignorant, just making a remark about the outrageously priced headphones, or literally wants to know why they charge $400.
It's not about being an "economics" dork. You don't even need to be moderately intelligent to understand the process

You're inferring a ton of shite regarding a guy who was obviously asking whether Beats are overpriced or not in terms of audio/build quality.
Posted on 12/10/14 at 11:58 am to Darth_Vader
It's all in the branding when talking about Beats.
I'm pretty sure you can get a pair of $150 Audio Technicas that are of better quality. Also when researching people suggested this sub $30 pair of headphones from Monoprice is competitive with the higher priced sets.

I'm not
It's 1 of the 3...I took the OP as "seriously, these things are overpriced as frick"
not "seriously, explain the pricing to me"
not "I'm dumb as shite, how is it possible they charge this"
people complaining about marketing jacking up the price is ludicrous...everyone has been taken. If you ride a Harley, you got got...we all get got. And we don't mind.
so naturally the answer is "supply and demand"
especially when I don't know if he means cost or value, which a lot of people tend to confuse

That's exactly what I was doing. No need for an Economics 101 lecture.
