This is a couple weeks old so SIAP. Just thought it was an interesting story about how a seemingly hard working middle class family took a big hit in the downturn.

Totally agree. Most people in this country live check to check. I have no problem helping a hardworking guy out who falls on hard times. It could really happen to anybody.

Is this article claiming that food stamps are necessary? I tend to have a positive outlook on humanity, and believe in all my heart that this lady would have been helped whether or not the government was there.
Besides, food stamp users are not, and never have been, predominantly people who were once middle class.

Most people who argue against food stamps have no problem with the gov't actually issuing food stamps. It's all about the details.

The ends do not justify the means. I donate and volunteer at food banks all over my area, because to me, food stamps and food banks are worlds apart in what they represent.

Did you read it? She's not arguing that they are necessary. She's just talking about how she thought she'd never be in a position to have cause to use them. She's talking about how it felt to stand in line at a grocery store and be judged for using them. Its not about once being middle class, I thinks its more about finding out that not everyone who uses these programs are dead beats looking for a handout. I'm not pro entitlement. I pay a shite ton of taxes and hate that any of it goes to some a-whole who thinks the world owes him something. But thats the guy you always hear about and the title of the article makes you think its just another one of those stories.

That's what can happen if you buy a new Mercedes when you have a combined income of 120K. Should have bought a used Honda instead.
And yes, I'm aware her boyfriend bought it before they'd met. That simply makes it a worse decision.

The car was also paid off well before they had their financial issues. It's more or less just an attention getter for the article.

Find me a story about a black family, who bettered themselves, hit hard times, and then worked their butt off to get out of poverty and I'll give them the same respect I give this woman.

i don't get not selling the mercedes, they could have sold it and bought a safe reliable 7500-10k car and been just fine and had plenty on top for groceries and living expenses. I guess that makes too much sense.

She called it a Kompressor, but that's not the model of the car, that refers to the 4 cylinder compressed injection engine. It was probably a base model SLK or C Class coupe. Which both sold for less than 30 grand brand new iirc, so they wouldn't have gotten more than 7 to 10 for it used anyway. After buying a another car that doesn't leave much for living expenses.
And in the article she admitted that they probably could have sold it but that they never thought about being poor and needing to get rid of their nice things, they just thought they needed a new job and it was taking too long to find one.
