I like to picture it as a slow down. Our bodies begin to feel heavy and numb. Our senses feel stretched out, like our breaths are slow and deep. Our sight begins to blur. Sounds around us distort and deteriorate into something low pitch and unintelligible. This all happens in a few seconds or maybe an instant, but as our brains shut down, we try desperately to hold on for dear life, slowing our perception as much as we can. As your heart stops, you lose control of your body and you know it. You can't move any bit of yourself, not your hands, feet, shoulders, head. Not your eyelids, lips, or nostrils. A prickly sensation flutters into your head as the oxygen cuts off. You start to analyze the situation, try to find some philosophical truth in the experience, but you can't. You've lost your thoughts, your voice, your inner-you that has always been there for you. That you is gone. Just before it's all over, you have one last thought that you'll never process, you'll never remember, but in the of the depths of the most extreme darkness, something came to mind. But you're gone and nothing will ever know what that thought was.

I have been in the room when a lot of people pass. I keep thinking I will feel something, have an epiphany, something....instead the bodies just look like they are finally relaxed. Never feels spiritual or like a soul is in the room....but who knows.
