I second the 100 series Land Cruiser or Lexus. $12-15k gets you into a great one. 80 series are more expensive right now.

I'll also add:

1) R129 Mercedes SL. For the top of your budget you can find a V12. Same basic engine as Pagani uses. Add straight pipes for bonus fun. I'd settle for a 500 with those glorious AMG deep-dish wheels, though.

2) W124 Mercedes 500E. Built by Porsche. Bulletproof V8. One of the first sleeper sport sedans. I've seen these on C'list for within your budget. Mostly by people who don't know what they have, or high mileage.

3) Early Cayenne Turbo. Are differentials expensive? Sure, but that's worst case scenario. Look at all the ones that are passing 200k miles these days (plenty of good forums to do homework, I prefer 6speed to rennlist). They've shown to be pretty damn reliable for over a decade. Issues with cooling pipes have been addressed.

4) Depending on your definition of fun... the Lexus LS430. A lot to be said about buying a car up to it's arse in luxury features and comfort for the price of a Kia Rio.

I was just looking at a 1999 4Runner for $5k that looked brand freakin new. Lots of customization options at that price level.

Ok, I'll just need you to foolishly look at a vehicle purchase as any type of investment first.

This is true for most, but not all cases.

Key is knowing what you are doing and buying the right collector car for the right price.

No point in spending 50K+ on a new vehicle for it only to depreciate 50% in a few years.

So why would you want to buy a 10 year old car when you get probably get a 1-2 year old Kia or other comparable model for under $15k?

Depends on what you want it for, but if I had some loose money for a fun car, I'd find a nice TR6.

I've been looking at '70-'71 DeVilles and El Dorados. If one isn't completely restored (or vintage), under 15k is easily doable.

But you'll spend thousands in gas I think the DeVille gets about 10mpg on the highway.

I work at a used dealership in Montana and we just had a 2008 Audi A8L 4.2 traded in that's really damn clean. 108k miles, $13990. Colors are VERY dark cherry, almost black, over caramel/baseball glove-color leather interior with burl walnut accents.

The L denotes the long wheelbase model, so the legroom in the back is ridiculous; if you've ever been in the back of a CrewMax Toyota Tundra, it's like that, except your seat is heated and powered like the fronts are.

Used A8s are a sneaky good German car value simply for the amount of car you get for the money, if you don't need/want an SUV.

And I will second GaryMyMan on the Lexus LS sedan. If your #1 things are ride comfort and quietness/isolation, it starts and ends with those cars. There is simply nothing better.

Or you want to drive a fun car for a reasonable amount of money.

Is this where yall start off with the "new car is a bad investment" bit?

It has the same effect on your net worth as lighting cash money on fire and throwing it into the fire place or BBQ pit.

You can pretend it doesn't, or that a car is an investment at all (it isn't) or that a new car isn't subject to free fall depreciation of 50 to 70 percent over a 3 to 5 year period.

That doesn't render your opinion any more supportable in the face of facts. But, it's your money, baw. Waste it the way you want.

Some cars are investments. Some of the cars in this thread are potential representations of this.

However, daily driving them likely won't produce those results. With a necessary depreciating asset, like a car, the "investment" isn't so much the profit made, but minimizing the loss.

You would agree, then, that buying new (or leasing) every 3 to 5 years is probably the most expensive way (all other things being equal) to manage this expense, wouldn't you?

Aren't you the same "LNCHBOX" who consistently defends new cars as alternatives to used cars as somehow "smart" and financing it, to boot, is even "smarter"?

Or do I have you confused with some other poster?

For certain vehicle types, I've absolutely said that. And I'm unequivocally correct too.

ETA: But that has nothing to do with the point you missed in this thread.
