$15/hr plumbers are much more common.

In Shreveport/Bossier you couldn't get a plumber to piss in your direction for $15/hr. Typically a $70 to $100 first hour fee followed by $40 to $70/hr.

I know the plumber doesn't see all of that unless he's working for himself, but he's seeing well above $15/hr.

I’ve done several plumbing jobs myself. Sure it takes me half a day but I’m SAVING money. Last time I called one it cost me $400 and he finally got it unclogged. Something I def tried to do? But couldn’t. Can I now? Probably so. I’d have to go another route than he did though. He struggled. Electrical work? If quote is cheap? I’ll have em do it. Changing electrical outlets? Piece of cake. Lights, fans. I do it myself and my old man is an electrician so if I need work done? He can help me. I used to dis plumbers. Now? I praise them. Crappy work? Sure! But they do good work if reputable. Thing is you’ll pay the piper.

What's really funny is he makes just as much if not more than you and definitely enjoys a hell of a lot more free time than you.

My plumber is an anesthesiologist for his side gig

He must make the same at each profession.

Except when he bills for plumbing he gets paid in full upfront or after job is complete, but when he bills for anesthesiologist work he bills for triple the amount, then renegotiates a few months later with the insurance for a fraction of the billed amount, then gets paid for 80% of the renegotiated amount by the insurance company, and then bills the remainder to the patient who will more than likely not pay and the bill is sent to medical collections who might buy the debt for 25% of the billed amount.

Ain’t medical billing grand.

It’s taken that man years to complete that job in 30 minutes. You’re paying him for his experience.

More bothered that both ends of the water filter lines connect to the same fitting.

I am almost in agreement

My kid could go to trade school. Get out get a job. Get employed by a solid outfit. Get 5-7 years good experience and I could get him set up in his own business. Cheaper than college and he is making bank with people working under him at 35.

That's an assumption. Many blue collar were white collar who just realized they could do better with their hands and no boss.

When times are hard, repairmen eat good.

My old man (RIP) was a plumber his whole adult career. He made me work with him every summer throughout high school. It was awesome because I got to spend time with him (I lived with my mom in a different city) and I got to earn alittle scratch. But, most of all I learned a valuable trade that no one can ever take away from me. I can't begin to tell you how much money I've saved myself and my friends and family. Although sometimes it can be a crappy (literally) it sure can make bank.

Plumbing is a disgusting job. And how would you like to be working in water in freezing weather? If he can learn the trade, you probably could too and save your 350.

There are options in plumbing. Not all of them are out there wrangling turds out of clogged pipes. I know some that strictly do new construction and make serious bank.

That's the best one to get into for plumbers. New construction. Especially now that's its all pex with ratchet straps and pvc waste plumbing. No soldering, no threading pipe. Just simple plastic runs.

The opposite end would be the rooter plumber . The one whose job is to clear out clogs in waste pipes. Or the underslab plumber. I know they make bank and have illegals do the hard work first usually. But still. Under a house in shite and mud laying pipe?

Couldn't do it.

But the new construction plumber that's a money printing relatively easy job.

If you can get hooked up with a few builders that do decent volume then you have it made. As you said, the rough-in these days isn't hard at all especially if you have a track hoe or trencher for the waste pipe. The top out is probably the most time-consuming part running the pex and of course setting the fixtures at the end is easy. It's all fairly simple and lucrative.

My buddy owns a plumbing and HVAC company in north LA. Some of the stories he tells me of the houses they have to go into are disturbing.
