Bonus question, don’t Google...why is it called plumbing?
Something to do with wells or the nightmen who cleaned the London sewers?

First pipes were made from lead. "Plumb" comes from the Latin word for lead. That's also why the chemical symbol is Pb. And a plumb bob is called that because originally it was a piece of lead on a string.

I do all work on my house and cars except for Automatic Transmission. Its not that I can't do the Transmission work but the special tools along with knowing what parts have been upgraded it isn't worth it

While I agree that tradesman can definitely make bank, where are you getting a college degree for $5k a year. I'm pretty sure even a juco is more than that. My kids dorm his 1st semester of college was north of $6k.

Because original piping was lead, plumbum in Latin hence, the periodic table symbol, Pb.

Talked to one last week that's going to charge $150 to thaw pipes with a heat gun.

Poor bastard has no college education. I just scratched out a check for literally tree-fiddy to repair a pipe in my ceiling. About 30 mins work.

Why does a good plumber cost so much?
Because they are fricking well worth it.

Instead of saddling kids with mountains of debt for useless degrees, the student loan program should be helping kids in trade schools. Guaranteed in my county HVAC/plumber/electrician types are making more money than most lawyers their same age the first 5 years out of law school.

Or, better yet, stop cutting the budgets of Career Tech/Vocational Schools at the high school level. Start encouraging students to take those courses and destigmatize choosing that route. You have people who are needing workers and are willing to teach them. You have kids needing work and/or a career.

Hell, I had a friend in high school who had multiple certifications in computer tech (I'm not sure what they called it) before he graduated high school which didn't cost him a dime. He also won state and placed in national competitions that got him a scholarship that paid for his Associates degree and other certs he needed/wanted.

The same can be obtained for numerous fields, but we are too focused on pushing everyone into Advanded Diploma programs in high school that don't amount to shite for the large majority of students. At the same time, Career Tech is looked down on by many teachers and guidance counselors and viewed as an afterthought or waste of time and money by others.

Poor bastard probably makes north of $40/hr and has damn near since he started as a journeyman. Especially while you were shelling out $5k/ year for a college degree to make less money. And I say that as someone with a college degree myself.

There’s a lot to shite on people’s career choices. Going into the trades ain’t one of them. Or feel free to learn to fix your own toilets, air conditioner, and electrical work. Those guys professions are going to be in such high demand within a decade you’ll be begging for someone to come work on your shite.

I see l, sarcasm meter broken or my post was poorly crafted. Either way apologies to the plumbers I offended. My half bath was hemorrhaging so it was an easy $350 to scratch out.

We haven't had this thread in a while where trades people jump on here and claim to make 6 figs and work 20 hours a week.

I don’t think the sarcasm was missed by anyone. You won’t convince anyone on this board to believe declogging theTorches’ moms sanitary pads from her 1930’s home for $975 is the career path they envision for their children’s future. On the other hand, they will gladly help to promote such a noble path for everyone else’s children.

Where are you seeing that happen?

I sell training equipment to career tech/vocational schools at both the HS and college level. In my territory (GA, FL, AL), schools are being planned and built left and right. Georgia opened 2 ($7M in revenue for me) this year despite COVID and I have 3 more lined up for this summer (2 new and 1 renovation). I also have projects in AL and FL lined up for the next 2-3 years at around $3 million per project.

And those are only high school level projects. College is similar numbers. Our company will do record revenues 3 years in a row.
