Ways to meet new friends?

I'm just in a social rut. All my small circle of friends from high school want to do is smoke and play video games, and sleep. I want to meet people, experience life, and have fun. i see people on facebook that travel to Australia, party on boats with girls in bikinis, red dress run, and all kinds of stuff. hell, Id be down to just go to a restaurant with a girl.
What are some ways to meet new people? It is much harder when you get older.

go do things you like and you'll find other like minded folks. Have a dog? Take him to the park or to a dog park...boom, instant opportunity to meet other people with dogs. Go to a gym. Play sports. Join a kickball league. Make friends at work. Become a regular at a bar. Join a dating site. There's a shitton of ways to meet people.

Most people suck so don't worry about befriending a bunch of people.
Find a girlfriend and enjoy doing things with her. Try online dating if you aren't good at approaching women.
What are your hobbies? Join some local groups/club associated with that. You may have some luck at meetup.com
Go travel and do things by yourself and just be friendly to people along the way. You'll meet some cool and interesting people at some point.

yeah, Im going to do intramurals. Im at LSU . I can make small talk, but its hard to break the barrier and make real friends, not friends you just talk too in class or something
sports, movies/ tv, comic stuff, i want to play in a band casually. i like drinking too.
