I'd like to take my wife to Italy. It's her #1 dream destination, and I would like to surprise her with a trip.

It would be a long ways down the road. Probably three years.

But I'd like to start saving and planning now.

How much should I shoot for? We wouldn't be looking for five star hotels and restaurants. It'd have to be on somewhat of a budget.

How long does one usually spend on a trip to Europe? I'd imagine you'd have to budget out two days for traveling. Would a four day stay be enough to make it worth it?

What parts of Italy would you recommend?

Florence was my favorite...by far.

Hell, no. I'm going for 12 days and am compromising on my things to do in Italy list.

Florence

My favorite out of Rome, Pompeii, Sorrento, Siena, Taormina and Palermo. Taormina is really nice for a couple of days though.

Depends on the duration of the stay. For a 2 week trip, I would say $10,000 (including flights).

Depends on how many places you want to visit and how much money you have. I'd rather go to two cities for 8-9 days and have a substantial amount of money to spend vs. 14 days/4-5 cities and be on a tight budget.

Hard to pick a bad spot. I've only been to Rome, but I loved it there and you could easily spend 10 days there and barely scratch the surface of what it has to offer.

Sounds like a great idea.

I have been to Italy once. We did Rome, Pompeii and Capri at the end of another trip.

Where you go really depends on what y'all fantasize or love about Italy. If it is the country side then look at Tuscany or around Florence. If its history than Rome or Pompeii would be good. If it is the coast then Amalfi Coast/Capri or Cinque Terre.

If 4 days(+2 travel) is all you have then that is what you've got, but you should consider spending more time.

Flight: 1,000-1,500 each
Hotel: 100-250 night
Food: 60-200 Total a day
Incidentals: 50 a day
Transport: 100-200 per major city

Florence is a must, according to family member that just got back from there. And of course Rome and Vatican City.

Went to Rome for a conference a couple years ago. Instead of hotels we rented an apartment with a balcony overlooking one of the many piazzas (plazas). I would definitely recommend this approach.

Question about flight cost - Is it possible to get a credit card with airfare rewards to help offset the cost?

any city is awesome. Air BnB or cross pollinate for apartment rentals instead of hotels, usually cheaper and will feel like a local.

I would plan at least 10 days at a minimum if you are planning to do more than 2 cities

for any other details look into Rick Steves, he gives a great overview of any place you want to go in Europe

You need to get a credit card and abuse the point system, now. if you have three years, put every damn thing you can on the card, even bills, mortgage, etc...

I personally like american express, if you go with the platinum or a similar card from someone else, you even get more flying and travel perks

I wouldn't go if only for 4 days. Since you are paying for flights, you want to stay for a t least a little while. I would say 7 days + 2 travel minimum. If you could take 2 weeks off work then you would have 14-16 days-that would be awesome and really give you time to check out multiple places, and relax even. If you can only get 1 week off it would still be good, because you can travel for 9 days with the weekend.

do this:

Eze France--two days. you can see Monaco and the French riviera

Catch a train or rent a car and go to Cinque Terre for another three or four days.

I have one now with Wells Fargo, and I use its point system extensively. Usually get $600 in gift cards (clothes, Christmas gifts) each year.

I'll look into if I can use those points for airfare. Though I just used Travelocity and for four nights and two plane tickets, the total came out to $2300.

I'd like to go for longer, but money is going to be an issue. Also, we have young kids, and they aren't coming with us. Not sure if I want to be away from them for more than a week. I know the wife won't.

Go during off peak times. I think I looked at March. Plane tickets were super cheap, nice hotels were super cheap.

Amex, you can use it on anything(hotels) and any airline. if you are a platinum member, you get $200 off fees, extra bags, 30% miles back, concierge, access to airport lounges, etc... There are other cards that are similar. Much better than Wells Fargo point system. You do have to pay for the cards though, through a yearly fee, so if you dont travel a lot, stick with the cheaper card and upgrade it the year of the trip.

Rome and Florence are musts. Lucca and Parma are great smaller cities that are high on my list as well. Siena is also great. The Amalfi Coast is as unbelievably beautiful as they say. I personally would skip Venice as I find it overrated.

Make sure to travel to Sicily. Completely different than the peninsula and just as awesome. Trapani, Taormina and Erice are my favorite places on the island. Marsala and Syracuse are incredible as well.

And if you can afford it...Capri is ridiculous.

Could I use the points through a deal I find on a site like Travelocity or Hotwire?
