People won't feel as guilty about their sins if they can be creamated and have their ashes scattered.

So God can resurrect my decomposed body, but tracking down the ashes is a little too much for him?

I think I'll take my chances and make him work for it

Explains the "why"?

Why? Because I'm dead and don't want to stick my family with an uneccesary funeral bill.

Um. I have always knew that we Catholics cannot have our ashes scattered. I don't think this is a new rule, just re-stating an old rule.

It is all just a suggestion.

They used to suggest that priests kept their hands off of little boys. A lot of priests didn't follow that one. Luckily for them, they were protected by moving them to other states or countries.

If you choose to dump the ashes wherever the deceased wished, feel free. The church will have your back, as history has shown.

How does that work for the relics of saints sent to churches across the globe?

It's been a couple years since we've had a good ginger or Ukraine girl thread. Those things were awesome.

Hey Pope....ashes to ashes. The dust should get returned to the Earth.

I guess the properties he's talking about are owned by the church. Sounds like he's trying to keep the money in house

Please take a moment to understand the Catholic position from Catholics. There is so much misinformation and ignorance in this thread I don't know where to begin.

This is just clarification and explaination of long standing tradition. They used to not allow cremation without specific justification. The idea is that the church believes in the resurrection of the body.

Directly from the creed, "...I believe in the resurrection of the body..."

While we recognize that God is all powerful and can accomplish anything, including gathering ashes from where they were spread, as a sign of reverence to the fact that we are made in the image of God, we keep the body together.

Also, the church believes in intercesory prayer. If someone wants to pray for their loved one they may be more comfortable doing so at a single location rather than the ocean or a mountain range. This also lends itself to the possible intercession of complete strangers, that make up The Body of Christ.
