How does it make sense? The pedestrians should always watch out for cars first because a car can KILL a pedestrian. Cars are the danger on the road because they are far more massive if there's a collision, and everything else should yield to cars/SUVs/trucks. If a motorcyclist gets into an accident with a car, 9/10 motorcyclist gets hurt worse, same with a bike, same with a pedestrian.

so in Houston a major city wouldn't a designated bike lane be a major improvement?

Major improvement in terms of what? Houston is too big for bicycles to become a prevalent type of transportation. Most people live out in the suburbs and commute into the city for work, and im guessing 80% of those who work downtown have a 30+ minutes commute. I think bicycle lanes would help for those living downtown, but Houston needs to vastly improve its motorized public transportation system before it even begins to think about things like bicycle lanes. If they could get an efficient system going that would reach out to the suburb areas to allow quick transportation into downtown areas, then it would clear the roads enough for bicycle traffic to be accommodated. Why would you want to bike in Houston anyways with all the traffic?

Yes, I agree. We should completely change our traffic laws all so your life is easier. It's your world, the rest of us just live in it.

I would bet that a pretty high percentage of people live within reasonable biking distance of work. If biking were a safe option on most or all streets, maybe a lot more people would ride bikes to work. That would cut down on traffic, reduce gas consumption, reduce emissions, do less damage to roads, cut down on obesity and improve people's health. It's insane that we haven't made this happen already.

Bicycle lanes cost maybe a thousandth of what motorized public transportation costs.

At 10 m.p.h., which is conservative for bike speed if there are bike lanes, that would mean that everyone who lives within five miles of where they work would have the same or shorter commute if they rode a bike.

Well, they don't live in Houston.

You're correct, along with midtown, montrose, heights, Washington avenue, rice military, river oaks, upper Kirby, museum district, rice village and west university.

Because cyclists don't sit in traffic.

And free ice cream. Don't forget the free ice cream.

However, I don't think it's all that unrealistic to think that if it were an option, a pretty good number of people would do it. For some, in addition to all the other benefits, it might even allow them to do without a car, saving them a major expense. If even 10% of people did it, it would make a huge difference.

How much in taxes do cyclists pay to support this?

You'd have to break down property taxes because that's what almost entirely funds the local roads which cyclists use.

I'd be willing to pay my share through fees or usage taxes or whatever.

Motorists only pay 48% of their fair share. PDF warning

On avg 51% of every dollar spent on roads comes from taxes and fees levied to an automobile driver.

48% or 51%.. Lets just say HALF is paid for by auto drivers.

If cyclist wanted to anti up an remotely relevant number then I would be fine with it. However the fact is that cyclist put in <1% of the total as it stands.

Most pay taxes and property taxes. But we all do not ride bikes on public roads.

WTF are you talking about? Local roads are paid for from the same coffer. Are you claiming that the state doesn't spend a dime on local projects? That would be an outright lie.

The Capital Region Planning Commission has the task every year of figuring out how to spend millions of dollars in federal gas tax money, and this year, commission members have made their picks for how to spend $53.35 million in the Baton Rouge area.

About $37.61 million of the money will come from federal funds, while the remaining will be provided through local matches.

So 37 of 53 million dollars came from gas taxes alone..

And all of it comes back to the stupid decision that bikes shouldn't be allowed on sidewalks with pedestrians. Put the bikes back on the sidewalks where they belong
No. They belong on the street more than the cars do. That's why cars have to go through so much red tape.

Actually, it is. It's THE major east/west highway north of Florida and it's been in terrible shape for quite some time. There's a ton of industrial supply companies along it due to Exxon and the rail line, but the road is pathetic. Good to know it's being improved.

Also, Greenwell Springs has 1 of only 3 bridges across the Amite River. The other 2 are on Florida Boulevard and I-12.
