Might have to give some more thought to a full size. Lake Charles Toyota has a 2017 Crew Max V8 Tundra listed at $36,000. Seems pretty reasonable, right?

For some, sure. I'd hate to drive it up and down a parking structure or down the narrow streets of New Orleans daily. Not to mention the heaviest things I'll ever tow are far less than 7,500 pounds, and get 21mpg, I should be good.

If it's decently packaged with a 5.7 that's a good price.

I own a Tacoma, it's 18 months old, and could trade it in for a comparable new Colorado.
Not sure what other argument need be made for Tacoma, beyond that, it is all about preference.
I like the look of the Chevy more, but the Tacoma is one of the best vehicles ever made and is reflected in resale value. That $3-4K more you would spend now would be repaid when you get your next vehicle.
Also, 4x4 usually holds value dollar for dollar. Don't worry about how often you will use it, if you ever have to use it, it will be worth it.

I been considering this same thing. From all reviews the Colorado is a better value with a better ride and in cab feature. Tacoma is better on resale which is crazy because I would never pay what they ask for a used tacoma. Tacoma owners are like Yeti owners its like a fricking cult, I don't get it.
I just don't know if I could get used to going to a smaller truck from a fullsize.

I'm considering downsizing next year as well. Nissan and Ford are supposed to be coming out with new ones as well.

Apple CarPlay would the main reason I would want Colorado over Tacoma

I got a '16 4x4 SR, base, DCSB Taco back in Sept. I had a Ridgleine before. The Taco has less in cab storage and no trunk.
I love the truck otherwise. I have had 2 service bulletins done. One is a software fix for the transmission. The other is for a vibration in deceleration. Some have complained about wind noise and some other stuff. There are plenty of people that have complained about the Colorado as well.
I get 22-23 mpg on my 25 mile commute to work. 23-24 on flat interstate.
I looked at the Canyon, but felt every bump of the road in the steering wheel, and interior felt cheap or just a little off. Taco does ride more like a truck.

New Truck - Colorado or Tacoma
Colorado. Or Canyon if you like the styling. They did a really good job with them.
They are finally starting to come down off the price a little on the Duramax Diesel models too.

The Tacoma forums are complaining of a lot of issues on the '16 Taco. Assuming because they are new.
Consumer Reports gave the 2016 Tacoma models poor marks for reliability issues. I think they improved for 2017 but this new model apparently has or had some kinks. It's been out for over a year now so it's probably fine.

I bought a Tacoma for $25k and sold it 9 years later for $17k. During that time the only thing I had to do outside of normal maintaince was was replace the rotors.

Diesel Colorado 4x4
Have you checked out the new Ridgeline? Pretty neat features on that thing.

Can't fit my Tundra in my garage, don't how much of anything. Pretty much no need for full size truck.
You always get a bigger garage, not a smaller truck. TNFL

A Tacoma and a Colorado, while the same class size, are not even close to the same vehicle.

So, 2017 Colorado or Tacoma?
The one that holds it's value the longest.

he Colorado has come a long way and looks to be on par with the Tacoma now
Never. Look at the resale value. Tacoma holds 82% of its initial cost at 60 months.
If you are the type to drive until it's wheels fall off, then the Tacoma. It's proven to last 300,000 miles.
If you are the type that likes to pay off a car, then down the line trade it in and get a new one. Tacoma again. My 2007 Tacoma has depreciated a whopping $1500 in the five years I have owned it, while generating a tax write off of around $7k a year .
If you are one who likes a new vehicle every 3 years or so, get the Canyon, Colorado because as new trucks, they are better in most ways you can measure. Nicer interiors, more comfortable, more options. It's the long run.
When I got my truck, my buddy got a 06 King Ranch. He has changed the Transmission, the heater core, the AC evaporator, the alternator, the power steering pump, the Sunroof, the radiator and a few lines and electrical parts.
In the same time frame, I changed U-joints, and the oil.
The build quality of the Tacoma is outstanding. As a shade tree mechanic, it's been boring having a vehicle that never breaks down.
