To me, middle class is combined income of 100-300k. Outside of that you are poor or rich.

Things I (or parents) once paid but no longer do:

NSF fees
Higher insurance premiums
PMI
Credit card interest
Car payments
Bank fees (wires, official checks, etc)

Things I pay for now that I wouldn't have paid for in the past (and parents never paid for):

College funds for my kids
Retirement account
Nice family vacations

At first, I vehemently disagreed, but the more I think about it, that's a good number.

A combined income of 100k is middle class. A combined income of 300k is upper middle.

Well, class is both a cultural and economic phenomenon. You can be rich, and middle class just as you can be upper class and, well, not rich.

With that in mind, I would look at where people live, their occupation, and their spending habits. That would tell you a lot about their culture, and in turn their class.
