I talked to Stephen King about you talking to your LSU professor, he said your guy's a dunce.

Everything in the world is not online, but a simple google search brought this one up.

Have no fear, Common Core will put Louisiana back on track with the rest of the country.

I'm in my first year of teaching, and the lack of knowledge concerning writing is nothing short of astounding. These kids have no idea how to even learn, and at this point it's really too late.

One problem is that writing skills are not being taught - certainly not effectively. Teachers sending home children with writing assignments for homework with out even teaching basics in class has become quite common.

As a former Box Top collection coordinator for my daughter's school, I'm pretty sure those bonus points they're talking about on that link are Box Top bonus points (= cash), not points for grades. See the way they tally the total at the bottom? That would go towards helping a class win the popcorn party for having the most points.

ETA: this is not to say that your nephew's school or teacher isn't offering points towards a grade for stupid fund raisers, just that Box Tops has all sorts of "bonus point" themselves that they offer for different things. I know my kids' schools at least would not allow grade points for this kind of thing.

Teacher's Unions

Teachers today are not compensated on how well they teach our children, but on how well their unions negotiate.

has no influence on grade inflation ... zero ... get a clue ... it's fine to blame unions for some things, but grade inflation is the result of today's parents wanting their kids to get top grades with little to no effort ... period ...

I've never heard of box tops for grades, but when my daughter was in fourth grade, they did box tops for credits towards the Friday goodie box.

One thing I have noticed is that in some classes, they have all semester to make up NTIs. Im a little torn on this. Its nice for kids who might have a string of inexcused absences that aren't their fault, but it gives kids this false sense that they can just coast and makes deadlines kind of pointless, which won't be the case in the real world.

This isn't just a kids of today thing. Teachers have always given bonus points for bullshite.

In reality however, this started around the time of the Vietnam Protests, because A students could get out of recruitment.

You are right. Kids are being inflated because no one wants to tell them the truth, and it is ruining their lives.

There will come a time soon when men can no longer read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution. Obama will look and laugh from his gold plated throne made from the guns he took from the people in his office in the new capital of America, Somalia.

I was a B C student because I would never do homework. I would ace the test but when homework is worth even 20% of your grade it hurts you big time.

Its one of my biggest complaints about schooling. On top of that you have to spend an additional $100+ dollars for online websites to turn in homework.

BTW the answers to the online homework can be found online 90% of the time. That results in students cheating to pass the homework and because homework is worth so much they pass solely for that reason and never actually learn anything.

So now we have all these people passing when they shouldn't, they are also getting degrees when they shouldn't, which is saturating the job market with way too many stupid people with stupid degrees.

Its a money making scheme that's needs to stop. " you need a degree to get a job" "you need to do your homework to pass" " you need to buy this $100 program along with this $200 text book to do homework"

That's all bullshite. what happened to going to class learning from a teacher and taking his test and doing the homework he made.

Also it pisses me off that people feel you must have a degree to get a job. Unless you are going to be a Doctor, engineer or scientist you don't need a degree. oh you have a degree in accounting cool, I know 20 people with out degrees that are just as capable as you.

I'm amazed at all the kids in elementary school and junior high taking the ACT. What's the purpose of it?

And at the same time, high school is more competitive than it has even been.
