Is that the gas cap on the front quarter panel?

Owner of an XC90 and an S60. Volvo for life here.
I had an Acura TL before the S60, I haven't noticed a lot of difference in the price of maintenance - probably higher than a Ford or Chevrolet, though.
The new XC90 s are going to get attention. They are awesome. We'll probably go to Sweden and pick one up in 2017.
I don't go to the dealership for service. There's an import guy that I go to who is reasonable. He lets me order parts from swedishautoparts.com
For example, timing belt kit on SwedishAutoParts.com is $144.88. Its $415 from Volvo. Same exact thing.

I bought an XC60 (the small crossover SUV) for my daughter who is a freshman at LSU. Not an exciting car, I don't love the looks, but it is solid on the road, though not a thrill or joy to drive. She totaled it hydroplaning in a scary one car accident on I-49 near the Boyce exit. Car skidded off the hwy, tipped and landed on its side in a drainage ditch in about 3 feet of water. All air bags deployed, and she made it out totally unscathed. That was a 2011, held its value well and insurance paid well, and I'm about to close the deal on a 2012 XC 60 for her. In the year we had that car, no $ spent on repairs - only routine maintenance.

Was my 3rd choice for the baby's vehicle.
Outstanding safety rating, excellent seats, stiff ride, lags behind competitors' in electronics and user interfaces.
A bit higher center of gravity which had a minor effect on handling.
Still, an excellent choice in the segment.

Papi, I posted before I read your reply.
Confirms everything I've heard about Volvo. Glad your baby was OK.

Several years ago I bought my wife a new XC90. Biggest piece of crap i've ever owned. Had it towed two or three times in the first couple years. The worst was when it had to be towed to the dealer the night before we were going to drive to Disney for vacation. Had to borrow my mother's small freaking SUV and try to cram everyone and everything into it. Will never buy a Volvo again.

My dad had an XC90 and it was the biggest POS

Volvo is owned by the Chicoms.
No thanks.

Yep, this is definitely a con. I'm debating making the Sweden trip to pick up an S60 or S80 for the SO. I really would like the convenience of having the car to tour Northern Europe too but the Chinese ownership of Volvo is unsettling. If I had to bet, I think we'll stick with Lexus, I'm still a year out from the decision.

Should just get a Tahoe, highlander or a pilot

Do you mind sharing who you go to? I'm looking to do a little customization on the 2008 and possible keep it as a side car.

Nope
The link in the OP states it's 2WD, with a transverse layout, that's FWD.

Excellent post, VG
This is 100% accurate, OP would be wise to listen to this post

This is really my first purchase of a decent used car, over $10k. I really nervous and I don't want an expensive repair bills. I was also looking at the Mazda SUVs with the 3rd row seats

Yeah, lets compare these to a Volvo SUV

These are not a good used purchase, especially in the $10K range.
Look at Toyota and Honda.
Older Pilots aren't bad, but they have a crappy safety rating.
My apologies, I thought you were looking at new stuff. Best of luck in your search.

No this is my first time looking at a car OVER $10k. My price range is $20k. So new is obviously out of the question. I saw the Volvo in the OP and it peaked my internet. Of course o would love a New one but maybe another time in life
