Simply not true.
Even lower class Americans have 2 cars, a home, the smartest phone on the market, cable, and the list goes on. Most Europeans don't have these things.

My dad worked in a typical office back in the 80's. I did summers there painting, maintenance and such. Times were so much different then. You went home from the office and didn't worry about emails, texts, etc. They read the sports page during slow times instead of TD.com. And lots more people smoked at the office so hourly breaks were common. Anecdotally, I agree that Americans aren't as efficient at work compared to japanese or euros.
So the rest of the world had laptops and smartphones before us, have never smoked or read the paper?

Sweden is a rich country and has all the luxuries we do. Hell, look at all Scandinavian countries. your argument for us working so hard is complete crap. We work harder, and MOST people are still worse off.
Some of us have lived in Europe.

we have a much higher percentage of trash, but our middle class blows their middle class away
just think of the difference in housing and mobility (automobiles)

I've lived in 3 separate European countries.
I guess it just depends where you lived.

I can make socialistic policies work too, if you give me a society of educated, well-to-do folks who all look alike and are perfectly fine living in a country that has little significance to the broader world.
And yet they live longer, happier lives. And that health care...

I'm not talking about most European countries. I'm talking about the Scandinavian countries. Where you can live in a nice one bedroom, travel to various exotic locations during one of your 5 weeks of vacation, and have money to spare working at a fast food chain.

If you have the money, our healthcare blows Sweden's out of the water. And Canada's and the UK's etc etc

Yes, but even those with "no health insurance" in America are still often better than in those socialized countries. If you break your arm in America, you can go to any emergency room and get treated quickly regardless of your insurance. This is not necessarily true in Britain or Scandinavia. You may be placed on a waiting list.

hell even our poor have private rooms in hospitals. the rich often don't have private rooms in Sweden

I've spent a lot of time explaining to people why socialism isn't necessarily bad but that there's a reason that it works in Scandinavia and would never work in America. ^You sir, have hit the nail on the head.

10 years ago I would agree with this, not now.

Very well. I haven't been to Scandanavia, but I have lived in both Eastern and Western Europe and thought it was okay but not nearly as wonderful as most think.

Not for fracturing your arm. That will get treated immediately. (I know this because a friend broke his arm when drunkenly slipping on ice and had to be taken to the E.R)
I understand that there are certain things you may be placed on a waitlist for.
Again, I don't advocate universal healthcare in the U.S, and really have no dog in this fight. I just think that we have a higher percentage of people who work hard, and still cannot afford "luxuries" vs. Sweden, Denmark, etc

I love these threads.
Let it flow through you, that's it, let your weak little heart embrace socialism.
The United States is so wrong b/c you have to work 40 hours a week.
Just sit tight; soon we'll be working for The Leader.

let me refine my statement.
our middle class lives in spacious homes with multiple cars, cable tv, health insurance, etc
look at our poor and what they own
OUR POOR!

Since I don't have experience living in Eastern Europe, I can't speak for their standards of living vs. ours, but I will gladly accept that it is not as wonderful as some may think.
for the record, I don't think the standard of living is higher in most if not all Eastern European countries
