Going to NYC for Christmas and plan on checking out the MoMA as well as the Met. Possibly the Guggenheim as well. For those of you who've been before, what are your suggestions on what to see? I know I won't be able to see it all, but how did you choose which works of art you wanted to see?

Starry Night & The Persistence of Memory are must-sees for me at the MoMA.

Any and all suggestions are welcome. TIA

ETA: thanks for all of the recommendations, everyone. I'll spend a little less time than anticipated at the MoMA, little more at the Met, and then some at the Guggenheim. Might even add Frick/Whitney if I have time on another day. We will also be going to the Natural History Museum- very excited about that. So thanks again and I hope y'all have a great holiday

You should be able to see everything at MoMA.

You should be able to see everything at the MoMA. The Met takes at least a whole day to get through the whole thing. The Guggenheim is cool too.

The Museum of Natural History is really good too.

Buy tickets before you go! It's 2016 and yet most people wait in those hour long lines like dopes. I got on MoMA's website while standing in front and was able to skip (most of) the line. The Met has the same system.

Persistance of Memory is freakin' tiny, so heads up on that. You can get right up to it but Stary Night always has a crowd.

Guggenheim is fine, depending on the traveling exhibit. Their permanent collection is a fraction of those other two. The Whitney is also near Guggenheim if you wanted to see both of those.

Good luck at The Met. Was there for Labor Day and could've spent all day there.

That being said the Greek exhibit was cool, and we walked through as many paintings as we could. Don't miss Washington crossing the Delaware. And the knights armor and weapons was bad assed. Also we went to the roof for a cocktail, which was pretty cool.

MoMa had some weird shite, but see the Picassos, Van Goghs, Pollacks, and Monets. I wouldn't spend too much time in some of the exhibits, like they had a room with a bunch of cardboard standing up (wtf).

Here is a site that lists free museums and the days that other museums are pay what you want (I think even some like the Met are technically still "suggested" entry fees anyway).

Like others have said, you should be able to see everything at the MoMA. Met is huge, maybe research a few of the things that you'd like to see. Maybe see what's going on at the Frick too.

The MoMA is right down the block from my office if you want to IRL (no homo).

This. I walked in one room and there were cinder blocks and chunks of concrete with antennas sticking out of them.

Check out their websites. Sometimes they have discounted or free admission on certain days/times and for military folk (if that pertains to yourself).

just did MoMA again a few weeks ago

buy tix online and skip the line

You really should give yourself a good 4+ hours and see everything. If for some reason you're short on time, go straight to the top floor and work down. Most of the more more standard stuff like Picasso, Monet, Van Gough, etc is up there. The really weird shite is on the 2nd and 3rd floor.

Went to the Met. Pretty cool. The Museum of natural history is interesting as well. Wish I had visited the Guggenheim.

Love the MET.

Recommendation for the Guggenheim. Take the elevator to the top and walk down floor by floor - Loved the building/Architecture, collection was underwhelming.

You should consider adding The Frick Collection and The Whitney to your visit.

I would say start uptown at the Jewish museum give it an hour walk to the Gugenheim give that an hour then walk to the MET give that 3 hours and then uber downtown to the MOMA give about 2 hours

Altogether shouldn't take you more than 10 hours. You can finish the night off shopping and people watching down fifth avenue.

Last time I was in NYC I did both in a day. MoMA is no problem but the Met is huge. So you'll just have to cherry pick the things you're most interested in.

Washington crossing the Delaware at the Met was cool, and its massive. The Egyptian wing was pretty awesome.

Good recs in this thread. My advice would be to allow enough time. Cut other plans short before you take time away from these amazing museums.

Moma (last time I was there) is fairly small. You can take a long glance at every piece and still be out in under 3 hours. I still prefer it over other museums in the city, but I don't recall it being long and I've been there over 10 times.
